Directions to Intervale Cabin

Contact the Intervale cabin manager, Scott Fitzgerald (stf@alum.mit.edu,
(617) 776-0504 or (781) 849-7070x290) if you have any questions.=20

The rent is $5 / person / night for members and $10 / person / night for
non-members.=20

1.Get a map of New Hampshire. And leave well before dark. The last bit=
 of
the trip is tricky if you've never been there before.=20
2.From MIT, take 93 North to Exit 36, which is 95 North (mile 12).=20
3.Follow 95 North. At mile 21 stay right on 95, as most of the rest of
the highway becomes Rt. 128. (Buy a roll of tokens for $5=85then the toll=
s are
half
     price; you'd spend $4 anyway)=20
4.Shortly after crossing into New Hampshire, take Exit 4 off of 95, on=
to
Rt. 16 North (mile 63).=20
5.Follow 16 for a long way; signs will tell you you're heading towards
the White Mountains, and then towards Washington Valley, etc.=20
6.In Conway, you will see two traffic lights, separated by only severa=
l
yards (these are the first lights in many miles). Turn left here at the
second light,
continuing to follow the signs for Rt. 16 (mile 144).=20
7.Drive straight through the strip mall that makes up North Conway.=20
   8.Turn right onto 16A (mile 152).=20
9.Follow 16A for about 2 miles and cross a small bridge. The road
immediately after the bridge is Town Hall Road (if you turn left here, yo=
u
get back to
Rt. 16). Take the next right turn onto Dundee Road (mile 154).=20
10.In a few hundred yards, you will see a big flat sandy area on your
left. Park here. If you're lucky there will be a sign saying MITOC visito=
r
parking, but it
isn't guaranteed. DO NOT park anywhere else but here, not even to
unload gear. If you attempt to drive the rest of the way, you will annoy =
our
neighbors, possibly ruin your car, and earn everyone's lasting enmit=
y.
Continue walking uphill along the road. It is about .5 mile to the cabin
from here.=20
11.The first two driveways on the left lead into a sand pit. The next
driveway is very crude and has a sign saying "private drive" and another =
saying
"Tammy's Greenhouse." Please do not bother our neighbors by going up
their driveways. NOTE: the sign on the driveway going to Tammy's
Greenhouse has changed often. It used to say R.E. Webster and Sons. =
It
might not be there at all when you arrive.=20
12.The next driveway to your left (about 10 feet past Tammy's Greenhous=
e,
at the top of the rise) leads to a collection of houses and trailers. The=
re is a
mailbox on the right side of the driveway. The driveway has some old
metal debris on the left in the dirt and bushes. Walk up this, past all t=
he
trailers.
There are frequently loud barking dogs here. They are chained, but
don't go near them or the houses. Turn right past the last trailer, past =
the
signs that
say "No Cars" or "MITOC Walk in Only." Follow this road up the hill,
all the way to the top. PLEASE BE QUIET and refrain from flashing lights
towards the trailers or houses. We really need to remain on good ter=
ms
with our neighbors. Please respect them and their property.=20
13.You will find an outhouse, a yurt, a cabin, and various other things.
If you stray far at all in any direction, you will unwittingly stray off
MITOC property.
Please stay near the cabin (within 300' or so) as we have had some
problems with the neighbors regarding this.=20

                                            Alternate directions to Inter=
vale=20

2.Take a right at the end of the exit ramp, and go east on Rt. 104 for

d
proceed for 16.8 miles (total 50.2).=20

yellow ones), turn left onto Washington St. (This is the traffic light

the light at which you turn left to continue on 16 N.)=20

Hi
I am interested in renting a 2-person tent with padding and 2 summer sleeping
bags for 8/31 9/1 and 9/2. I was wondering if you take reservations for such
equipment. I just want to make sure that when I go on Monday 8/30 to pick
the stuff up that it will be there-otherwise I will be sleeping in the car
while camping.

please let me know

Unfortunately, we'll be running really short on tents on the weekend you
mentioned. It is not normally our policy to make reservations for
individuals. It might be a good idea for you to make other plans,
although you should feel free to show up at MITOC office hours on the
Monday (4-5) before your trip to see what's available.

Huh? Are you running some type of secure email (PGP, etc.) that
encrypts the entire text, not just the signature (it doesn't look
like crypt text, though.) It is instead some type of rotated
text cypher? Or another language (doesn't appear so either)?

Anyway, I can't read what you are saying...

Hi Matthew-thanks for letting me know that the MITOC supplies will be running
low for the next few weekends and that I can't make reservations. I was
wondering if you know of any other place in the Boston area that might
rent tents and sleeping bags. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks once again

Subject: MITOC meeting (Thursday @ 7pm)
Date: Thu, 05 Aug 1999 00:23:34 EDT
From: Michael J Freedman <mfreed@MIT.EDU>

Hey MITOC -

I just wanted to send out a reminder of today's meeting!

  Thursday, August 5
  7:00 pm, MITOC Office (W20-461)

This is the first "open" meeting for all members we've had
in a while. The BOD meets somewhat regularly - here's your
opportunity to voice your interests, recommendations, and
concerns. We'd really like to get people excited about
a fun, packed fall season. Come and help us out with ideas,
sign up as a "trip leader," or just give us some feedback.

This is *your* club: help come make and shape it!

Food and drink provided, normal office hours at 8pm.

Hungering for the trail,
Mike Freedman
MITOC President

Folks,

does anybody know where to get a resole kit for climbing shoes?
I called all the stores I could think of (EMS, REI, Campmore, Wilderness...)
but none of them carries the stuff.

					Thanks a lot,

						Boris.

You should have gotten my email about that guy John.

The main reason I am writing, however, is that MITOC should
really start keeping better track of membership. Perhaps
I am mistaken, but I don't think we keep any records of who
are members.

Matt - maybe you could do something shortterm...all desk workers
should (?) be able to log into the mitoc terminal. If we could
have a simple text file (until some type of database is
eventually set up) that lists:

Michael Freedman	mfreed@mit.edu 225-9381	Undergrad
Matthew Hollingworth	mholling@mit.edu	<something>	Graduate

You get the picture. Only would take a sec...

Have we started selling 1999-2000 memberships yet? Are we keeping the
fee at $10, as this is what I understand...

Mike Freedman

Mike, since our new rental system started up, all info for new members
is kept in a card catalog at the desk. We could computerize it if we
wanted, but I don't see any particular need..

Sorry, I can't do tonight, have to be in two places at once already...
Peabody and boston. Sorry.
There is that big meeting though, so I'd imagine that there'll be desk
workers there, so someone should be able to run desk for ya.

Flying - yes, I'm getting my instrument rating, so fly at least twice a
week on lessons, and there's always two empty seats. That's the easiest to
schedule :) I was toying with the idea of flying up to fryburg maine this
weekend to meet up with folks that are going on the intervale trip, but
I'll most likey fly home to CT to see family instead. Are you going to
intervale?
Next time I have a plane for a weekend day I'll let you know, but it won't
be for the following two weekends anyway, going to Colorado :)

take care,
Gigi

I am taking my father and step-mother climbing at dracut on thursday. It
should be amusing if nothing else... Anyhow, I won't have space in my
vehicle, but other folk with cars should come and bring people so we can
over run the gym yet another time this summer.

AMC is going there today, so I would like to go elsewhere.

Are you interested in going somewhere closer to the both of
us, like Black and White or Hammond? Jeff Breichbach wants
to go and Matt Holling....

Can we find somewhere else?

Matt,
While I am away, would you mind looking after the darkroom? It's stocked
with chemicals and reasonably clean, but I just wanted to make sure no
disasters occur.

I don't get any posts at this e-mail address, and I haven't been to MIT to check
e-mail there in ages, so I haven't read Eric's post.
Wallface sounds familiar. Don't know offhand, though. Dave's backpacking for a
week at the moment, so can't ask him.

I'll get you a sandwich for dinner. What kind of sandwich do you want? They have
the usual meat options, and lots of different kinds of veggies, various cheeses.
mustards, mayo, etc.

There will be a double keyholder trip the weekend of August 20-22 to BOTH of
the MITOC cabins in New Hampshire. For more info on the cabins check out the
MITOC web page at http://mitoc.mit.edu

In order for club members to use the cabins we require that they attend a
keyholder trip so they can learn how the cabins operate. We'll be going up
to Intervale Friday night, spending Saturday working around the grounds,
then going to Camelot Saturday night, and spending Sunday working on
Camelot. The trip will cost $20 / person and drivers will be reimburshed for
mileage. Dinner Saturday night is included. You will need to provide food
for all other meals.

I'd like to encourage new members and current keyholders alike to join us!
We'll have a great time and this is an opportunity to help maintain the
cabins which we all enjoy so much.

If you are interested in attending please fill out the form below and send
it back to me. I'll gather the replies and will be in touch the week before
we go up.

Have a great weekend!

Scott
