This is a reply to requests for boats and insurance. Here in
St.Petersburg, we have an active fleet and a nearby fleet in Clearwater.
We keep a constant list of 5 to 10 used boats from $1500 to $4000. At
least 3 used boats have been bought and 1 more put up for sale in the
last 3 months. Many of these are great buys and its easy to look for the
price and condition you can afford. If anyone is in sunny Florida
(Disney world is 2 hours away) or wants to come to the Dead of Winter,
Masters, or Mid-winters - call me and I'll try to get you in touch with
the current sellers. Maybe someone could try out a boat, but you'd have
to deal with the owner.
Steve Lang, Fleet 801 (813-893-9572)

We have numerous insurers here in Florida for dingy's. When I tried to
get insurance while living in inland SC and GA, the agents did not have a
clue. They had strange rules about sailboats (like not sailing in
saltwater) or towing. Here, we can go to independent insurance agents
who are used to dealing with small (and large) sailboats. My current
policy insures the Snipe for about $200 a year and does not exclude
racing. The problem is whether or not these companies can write
insurance to other states. I'm sure if there was enough business, they'd
do the paperwork to go out of Fl. Maybe SCIRA could ask about some
group rates, but I'm not an expert for this kind of deal, I just know you
need to shop on the coast.

Sail Expo

Sail Expo went very well and many sailors saw our Snipe and gathered
information. I will send Fleet Captains and District Governors
people's names for follow up. There are promotional material
left over so if anyone needs any Snipe propaganda, or wants to buy a
shirt, let me know.

Mid Winters

Actually the best thing about Sail Expo is it got enough Snipe
Sailors together to plan going to the Winter Circuit. I have never
been to the Midwinters, so:
     Where do people stay?
Does anyone know anyone interested in crewing?
When does the party end? I need to fly back for work on
    Wednesday.

So what's that phrase on everyone's lips "the devil is in the
details". If I can get all this sorted out, there will be two more
boats at the Mid Winters and Don Q.

Subject: new members

Our fleet, #567, recently presented ourselves at a local boat show here in
Lincoln, NE. The results were good. We got twenty names on our mailing list,
all of which have previous sailing experience. We have also begun receiving
calls from some of the 100+ seemingly disinterested folks that picked-up our
flyers from the booth.

Our plans now include a couple of social introduction parties before the
docks are in and some clinics and such to help aquaint the novices with
Snipes. We think we'll land some new crews and have already landed one new
member for sure and another in the works.

These new members and crews will help us get more boats on the water for
races and hopefully inspire some of the fuddy-duddies in our fleet to take
the covers off their boats and sail a couple races.

The total monetary damage?? Less than $150. All the time was volunteered and
we got a break from the show organizer because we weren't selling anything.

If you're tired of hearing skippers blaming the lack of crew for their not
being on the water and dissatisfied with the number of boats SAILING in your
fleet, give this a shot.

Mark Spicknall asked about how Lillia Snipes have performed in major
regattas. Here in Brazil we have only one Lillia. It was sailed by Carlos
Llamas, from Spain, in the last Worlds. I'm not sure, but I think he finished
in 10th. Marcelo Maia, who used to crew for Torben Grael, bought this boat
after the Worlds. Sailing with Antonio Paes Leme, they finished in 3rd. in the
1993 Brazilian Nationals. In the WHs they sailed with another boat and finished
2nd. Marcelo finished in 10th. in this year's Nationals.
The Lillia's plug is the one that Torben used to have here. He sold it
to them.

X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL11]

Hi all.

This is my first posting. I've been considering buying
a well-used snipe ($1000-1500(US)) for day sails and occasional
fun races but lately i've been thinking that the Bahamas races in
march might be a great way to catch the racing bug and work on my
melanoma :-/

So, can someone provide me more info? Or more importantly, who needs
crew? I think there was a posting a couple of days ago to that effect.
What are the financial arrangements? 1/2 and 1/2 for entry fee and
shipping? Or would the owner tradionally pay shipping. Are there
really people to stay with for free locally (as mentioned on the snipe
page)?

Here's a brief summary of my sailing if anyone wants to email me.
Note: no dinghy racing experience and i've never seen a snipe
but i'm familiar with all running rigging.

Learned to sail flying juniours in Hampton Roads, VA about 11 years ago.
owned a nacra 5.2 for a while, have rented lots of catamarans and the
occasional dinghy. Cruised and beer-can raced a Cal 27' in the St.
Mary's City Race. Cruised a 44' schooner on the Ches. Bay. Have
windsurfed for the the past 3 years (but you'd never know it from
my cheesy jibes).

Subject: Old Snipe Refurbishing

Greetings:

I recently purchased an older snipe (#17124). It's a Lofland SailCraft
fiberglass boat and I think it was built in 1968. It has been in my
wife's family since 1969 and is in very good shape. I've done a couple
things to it and plan on a few more improvments. I added some foam under
the front deck and back transom after capsizing it and realizing it
would not float high enough to bail out. I've also reinforced both the
port and starboard sidedecks since they were getting a little soft, plus
I'm a big guy (6'6", 270 lbs.). I'm really not interested in racing
the boat (someone said it would probably be overweight any way), but I
would like to make some improvments. It has a proctor mast which is
stepped at the deck. I'm sure the mast is very stiff compared to todays
masts. I'm considering removing the winch box attached below the
gooseneck to add more flex to the mast. Originally they were used for
wire halyards that have been replaced with rope to wire halyards. Is
this a good idea? Will it weaken my mast too much? I also want to lead
the main and jib halyards back to the cockpit (currently cleated on the
mast.) I'm thinking of mounting a cheek block on either side of the
mast just above the deck and leading the lines back to cam cleats with
fairleads on either side of the front of the centerboard trunk. Would
this work or should I try to run them below deck?

Thanks for any input or advise,

Scott Sammons

Charles,

Here is the entire Snipe schedule (that we have, at least) from the
Snipe WWW server. It includes District 6 (Southern California).

Do you have the District 7 schedule (we are missing that as well as
District 2 (West Central) and District 5 (North East).

Steve.

Comments:

These four regattas make up the SCIRA Midwinter Circuit. The Zimmerman Perpetual Trophy is
awarded to the overall winner of these regattas.

Generally, I takes 2 weeks to participate in the entire circuit, including drive time (24 hrs) and shipping
of boats to Nassau. The Midwinters and Don Q only take a week and the following Monday to complete.

Contact Alex Pline for more information about what's the best way to do this circuit.

Subject: Insurance

The insurance agent in Cleveland, Ohio is John Wanemacher (Wanemacher
Insurance). His phone number is 216-331-0351, fax=216-331-3054. I don't
actually have any insurance from him because I'm covered under my parents
account, but I can say he knows boats. He was an active one-design sailor
in the past and he now races a fast little PHRF boat that he and his father
made ages ago. I think I've even seen his advertisement in the Snipe
bulletin before. Your welcome to say I referred you. Good luck in your
search.

I second Jno's comments. I have had Snipe insurance from Wanemacher for 8
years on my snipe. The policy was actually written by Signet of Ohio. The
payments have been very reasonable, about $105->$150/yr/boat over this
period, with $100 deductable. My 2 Snipes are 1987 vintage (26926/26759) and
are insured for $5000 plus $500 for the trailer (what they cost new). Most
of the others in our fleet have insurance with him. We have always had quick
response and no hassels. This included a broken mast last year (not mine,
thankfully) and some cosmetic damages from from trailering and being
T-boned (I was on starboard!!). Anyone, also feel free to use my name as
reference.

SNIPE SAILORS,
There is a Snipe regatta this weekend in Valdosta (GA - actually
Lake Park, GA). The races will take place on a lake located close to the
Florida-Georgia border 2 miles from I-75 (e.g. warm weather).
25-30 boats are expected. Hotels are located near-by and
participants may camp on the Lake Front. We have a welcome party Friday
night and races are Saturday and Sunday. The races take place on a 2
mile long lake that "bottles up" in the middle - (making for unpredicted
winds/gusts through the cut.) Registration is $25 and includes food.
The VYC is primarily a Snipe Fleet.
