1995 Pan American Games
Sailing Competition
Friday March 17, 1995
Mar del Plata, Argentina

  <<<<<<<<<News Flash: J-24 team wins Gold>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sailor Mike Gebhardt Assured of Silver Medal

When he first got to Mar Del Plata for the Pan American Games
sailing competition, there was no question in Mike Gebhardt's
mind that he'd medal in the men's Mistral (windsurfing) class.
After Friday's racing -- with still one race to go in a 10-race
series -- it's mathematically certain that the Fort Pierce, Fla.,
sailor has clinched the silver, while Argentina has secured the
gold.
Gebhardt, who is a two-time Olympic medalist in windsurfing
(bronze-1988; silver-1992) and won the Pan Am gold in 1987, was
the only one of the 12 competitors to beat the Argentinian leader
in any of the past nine races, which have been sailed primarily
in high winds of 18-22 knots.
Neither the Argentinian sailor nor Gebhardt will be required
to race Saturday's single and concluding Mistral race. The
athletes' cumulative low-point scores of 8.5 and 13.25,
respectively, are untouchable, even if third-place Canada, with
27 points, should win. (A victory is worth .75 points.)
In the Mistral women's class, Canada has won the gold medal
and is expected to sit out tomorrow's race, opening the door for
USA's Lanee Butler (Dana Point, Calif.) -- currently third in the
overall standings -- to claim the silver medal.
Also competing Friday were six other classes -- Europe
(women's singlehanded dinghy), 470 (men's and women's
doublehanded dinghy), J/24 (Open four-handed Keelboat), Laser
(men's and women's singlehanded dinghy), Lightning (Open
triplehanded dinghy), and Snipe (Open doublehanded dinghy). Each
of these classes, except the J/24, will sail two races Saturday
to complete a 10-race series. The J/24s, which have been sailing
in a special round-robin match racing (one-on-one) format and
have narrowed themselves down from a fleet of 12 to four boats,
will sail their multi-race finals Saturday.
Europe sailor Kim Logan (Miami, Fla.) maintains her lead over
Brazil by 2.25 points.
After climbing to second overall yesterday, the 470 men's team
of Mike Sturman/Bob Little (Newport Beach/Santa Monica, Calif.)
fell to third Friday when they posted finish positions of 3-5.
In the 470 women's division, Jody Swanson/Debbie Hopkins
(Rochester, N.Y./Fort Wayne, Ind.) look solid for the silver
medal, having scored two second-place finishes Friday behind
shoe-in gold medalist Canada.
On the J/24 match-racing course, Paul Foerster (Dallas,
Texas), Rob Johnston (Dallas), John Bartlett (Austin, Texas), and
Troy Lawson (Austin) advanced to the four-boat semifinals round.
In a best 3-of-5 series, USA beat Canada 3-0 while the Virgin
Islands beat Argentina 3-0. Saturday the USA will face the
Virgin Islands in a duel for the gold and silver medals. Foerster
is an Olympic medalist from 1992 in Flying Dutchman class.
Doug Hart/Steve Stewart (both San Diego, Calif.) "maintained
the status quo" Friday in Snipe class with a 4-2- 5 that keeps
them in fifth place overall. Hart is an Olympic silver medalist
windsurfer (1983).
Jennifer Coolidge (Marblehead, Mass.) posted a 3-1-3 Friday to
move up from third to second overall on the scoreboard. She
looks solid for a medal but must work hard to snatch the gold
from Argentina.
Lightning sailors Jim Crane/Brenda Crane/Bill Crane (Darien,
Conn.), won their first race of the day and followed it with a
third to move into second place overall on Friday.
Laser sailor Tom Lihan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), slipped to
fourth overall today after he failed to keep Canada at bay.

I've been working on making an old boat (17733) I bought competitive... as a
result I've had to make several serious modifications. Two questions: a) I
recently cut out my old dagger board well, because it was the pre-shortboard
style... I'm reinstalling it and I can't seem to find any regulation on hieght.
Does anyone know of any restrictions, and what is the average height of peoples
dagger board wells (the distance from the punch mark 33 1/2 inches from the
bottom to the handle)? b) Anyone know a good cheap design for a pole launcher?

Thanx in advance for your help.

1995 Pan American Games
Sailing Competition
Saturday March 18, 1995
Mar del Plata, Argentina

USA Medals in Seven of 10 Sailing Divisions at Pan Am Games

Texas sailors Paul Foerster (Dallas), Rob Johnston (Dallas),
John Bartlett (Austin) and Troy Lawson (Austin) won the gold
medal today in the J/24 match racing competition at the Pan
American Games, laying to rest any speculation that world-ranked
match racing veteran Peter Holmberg and his team from the Virgin
Islands would be their undoing.
In fact, Holmberg himself had commented early on in the
regatta that any advantage gained by his one-on-one match racing
experience would be all but negated by the Texas team's
experience in sailing the 24-foot keelboats used for this
competition. The U.S. team's skipper, Foerster, is a national
J/24 champion (1990) as well as an Olympic medalist (1992 Flying
Dutchman class), while his three crew are all seasoned J/24
sailors.
Today's winds ranged from 15-20 knots. Yesterday, after
advancing to the four-boat semifinals from a 12-boat fleet, the
USA trounced Canada 3-0 in a best three-of-five series while the
Virgin Islands beat Argentina 3-0. All four semifinalist teams
had shown moments of brilliance during the prelims to post tied
scores at the end of an 11- flight round-robin series.
Also competing Saturday were six other classes: Europe
(Women's Singlehanded Dinghy), 470 (Men's and Women's
Doublehanded Dinghy), Laser (Men's and Women's Singlehanded
Dinghy), Lightning (Open Triplehanded Dinghy), Mistral (Men's and
Women's Windsurfing Board) and Snipe (Open Doublehanded Dinghy).
Each of these classes completed a 10-race series, and Pan Am
medals were awarded in 10 divisions. The USA won one gold
(J/24), four silvers (Europe, 470 Men's, 470 Women's, Laser
Women's, Mistral Men's), and one bronze (Mistral Women's).

-- Europe sailor Kim Logan (Miami, Fla.), who needed to beat
Brazil today to keep her gold-medal spot, failed to do so, and
settled for silver. After finishing 2-2 to Brazil's 1- 1, Logan
said, "I knew in the second race if I beat Brazil I'd still win.
I did my job on the starting line, positioning myself really
well, but Brazil rolled me later."

-- The 470 Men's team of Mike Sturman/Bob Little (Newport
Beach/Santa Monica, Calif.) won its first race of the day "by a
longshot" and was tied with Cuba for gold going into race two.

-- In the 470 Women's division, Jody Swanson/Debbie Hopkins
(Rochester, N.Y./Ft. Wayne, Ind.) did not have to sail today to
maintain their silver-medal position, but they went out anyway to
"iron out some mistakes we made yesterday." They finished 2-1
today.

-- Laser sailor Tom Lihan (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) finished fourth
overall after posting a 5-3 today in that class's Men's division.

-- Jennifer Coolidge (Marblehead, Mass.) maintained yesterday's
position of second overall to claim the silver medal today in
Laser Women's. She finished 2-1 and felt "really good sailing
downwind today" in the heavy-air conditions.

-- Lightning sailors Jim Crane/Brenda Crane/Bill Crane (Darien,
Conn.) met with mishap today when Bill Crane took a spinnaker
pole in the mouth and suffered two broken teeth. The team, which
had risen to second overall yesterday, finished fifth in today's
first race and retired in race two after the accident. The DNF
score of 7 points left them in fourth overall.

-- In the Mistral Women's division, Lanee Butler (Aliso, Viejo,
Calif.)--third in yesterday's overall standings-- needed to win
today's single race, putting one boat between her and the Virgin
Islands to claim the silver. Butler, who accomplished half her
goal by winning the race, was followed across the finish line by
the silver medalist.

-- Mike Gebhardt (Ft. Pierce, Fla.), who clinched his Mistral
Men's silver medal yesterday, sat out today's final race.
Gebhardt is a two-time Olympic medalist in windsurfing
(bronze-1988; silver; 1992) and won the Pan Am gold in 1987.

-- Doug Hart/Steve Stewart (both San Diego, Calif.) concluded
their Snipe series with a 4-3 score today and remained in fifth
overall for final standings. "We got ourselves too far back,
early in the regatta, to catch up," said a disappointed Hart, an
Olympic silver medalist windsurfer (1983).

There have been a few changes and It's now in a nice booklet form. I'll put

I don't mind a bit of this effect in medium air when I want the power. It
powers up the rig when it is sagged to leeward in the middle. Side bend is
similar to the bend in the fore and aft direction. If it sags to leeward in
the middle the main is fuller, if it goes up to windward in the middle it
gets flatter. If you have enough weight you can carry this sag or "S" bend
in more wind. For sure when you are starting to get overpowered you don't
want any "S" bend. At this point though it's hard to look at the mast.
Normally I would say that you should have a bit of "S" in light air,
straight in medium and some side bend (to windward at spreaders) in strong
wind. This will all happen somewhat automatically as the wind increases if
the mast is set up with just a bit of "S" in light air. You have to work
with the spreader length (as you have) and the angle to get the mast just
right. Make sure the mast is tight at the deck and then if you still have
about 1" of sag go a little shorter on your spreaders. Also check at this
point if the spreaders are pushing hard on the stops. If they are you might
want to first allow them to swing back a bit more and see what this does
first. It will straighten the mast sideways but let it bend a bit more fore
and aft.

Thanks, it's good to get the positive feedback.

Subject: Jibs

Mark or Craig:

I recently purchased a used sobstad jib made from the heavier sailcloth. Any
hints on tuning this sail. I've heard and read that the sail is tougher to
read.

My main is a Fisher that's one season old. How will this work with the jib?

Thanks

Subject: 1995 DonQ Results
X-Mailer: <PC Eudora Version 2.0.1>

The 1995 DonQ Regatta consisted of a three race series, all sailed on Sunday
the last day of racing, due to severe weather in South Florida. Races on
Friday were postponed on the water when the breeze built to over 25 knots
during the starting sequence of the first race. The fleet was sent ashore,
and treated to some wild reaches as they sailed in. Due to lines of
thunderstorms on radar (very rare for this time of year in Miami), racing
was postponed until the next day.

The Cleveland Fleet immediately went into "Code Blender". The only victim of
the Blender this year, was the Blender itself, suffereing from failing
bearings. Thankfully the Blender outlasted the RUM supply!!! Rest assured,
we have the technology, we can rebuild it! the evening was topped off by a
party held by local Snipers Ken and Kay Voss at their house. Many non-net
Snipers saw the Snipe WWW activities for the first time compliments of the
Voss's and their SLIP internet connection at home.

On Saturday, the fleet sailed out in a light southerly breeze and race
number got underway. About 5 minutes after the start the breeze shifted 180
degrees and built to about 40 as a squall blew through from the North,
capsizing most of the fleet and catching a few with their whisker poles
still up. After the squall, the race was cancelled and the fleet sent
ashore, where the races were again postponed until the next day due to more
threatening thunderstorms. According to some PHRF sailers who raced that
day, the winds were blowing 25-30 all afternoon. Again, a daquiri blender
party, compliments of DON Q Rum and the Coconut Grove Sailing Club
volunteers, kept the competitors busy.

Racing got underway 2 hours earlier on Sunday, but three races were
completed in 12-25 knot breezes.

Subject: Midwinters Results

Thanks to Doug Clark for faxing the Midwinter results to me after his
grueling drive back to Marblehead from Florida (with Snipe on top of
the van!). Anyone see his mylar jib down there?

Would any Snipers on-line who were there would care to write up a
brief report and send it to the group? I will include it with results
on the web page.

Corrections to me.

Steve.

Subject: Email list milestone

Sorry for the "non-sailing" content, but I wanted to mention that the
Email list just reached its 100th subscriber: John and Maggie
Manderson of (if I remember correctly) New York.

They were already in the Snipe-class on-line archive as they were a
part of the victorious Team Racing team at NAs last year. Check out
the picture of them (and a lot of other team racers) in front of the
Rolling Rock truck. The picture is in the Miscellaneous section of
the photo gallery on the web page
(http://www.ai.mit.edu/snipe/gallery/misc/misc.html).

Subject: Speaking of FAQ's
X-Mailer: <PC Eudora Version 2.0.1>

Speaking of FAQ's (list of Frequently Asked Questions)... I had never
thought about assembling one.

I am now soliciting suggestions for the Snipe FAQ. Please e-mail me
suggestions and I will attempt to compile answers to them. I'll then
circulate for any final suggestions or comments. I'm especially interested
in input from those who are either new owners of Snipes or prospective
owners etc. as this is the audience that would most benefit from the
existence of a Snipe FAQ.

Jerelyn: what are the most commonly asked questions from people who call the
SCIRA office?

Some things off the top of my head to get the ball rolling:

Where do I get plans to build my own Snipe?
How do I get more information on the Snipe?
Where are the fleets?
What's the optimum crew weight?
What's the competition like?
How do I find out about used boats?
How do I rig a pole launcher?

Thanks,

Alex

Here is the TV schedule (as found on http://www.ac95.org). Tape of
the AC would be great for this summer when a day at a regatta gets
blown out.

Also, a friendly note to keep traffic from getting too high: This list
is not the place for flaming about which AC syndicate is going to kick
butt. Save that for rec.boats or rec.boats.racing
