I agree on everything that Eric wrote about
the organization of the list, except for the
seminars issue. If we have to retrieve a file
via FTP to know which seminars on motor control
are scheduled, we'll never do it. I think that the
information about seminars and other relevant
events should be broadcasted to the list. I also
think that letting people know what is happening
is one of the main purposes of the list, together
with stimulating discussions.

There are two post-doctoral positions in motor control available
at the University of Provence - Marseille.

 One is for a 3 to 6 month research associate, starting as early
as june 1rst or later (but no later than december (salary about 2000/month).
The study deals with bio-robotics problems such as man-machine
interactions,graphics display, joy-stick telemanipulation, 3-D visuo-
manual tracking.

The other is for a longer term. It is a 3 years post-doc position (Human Frontier Grant)
starting around july 1st 1992 (salary to be discussed). The program deals with neurophysiological
and  neurobehavioral aspects of eye-head-hand coordination in visual target
pointing and tracking.

       The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and

       and research position in the application of Biomechanics to
       normal and pathological human movement.  Work will be in the

  Abstract.

 Most contemporary neural network models deal with essentially static,
 perceptual problems of classification and transformation. Models such
 as multi-layer feedforward perceptrons generally do not incorporate
 time as an essential dimension, whereas biological neural networks are
 inherently temporal systems. In modelling motor behaviour, however, it
 is essential to have models that are able to produce temporal patterns
 of varying duration and complexity. A model is proposed, based on a
 network of pulse oscillators consisting of neuron/interneuron (NiN)
 pairs. Due to the inherent temporal properties, a simple NiN net,
 taught by a pseudo-Hebbian learning scheme, could be used in simulating
 handwriting pen-tip displacement of individual letters.

Abstract

In recent years, research in telemanipulation has been primarily
concerned with problems related to the control of teleoperators and to
their Man-Machine aspects.  Only recently, the need has arisen of
evaluating the performance of teleoperator systems during the
execution of realistic tasks.  This research describes the design of a
classifier for the recognition of teleoperation tasks' phases,
independently of variations due to differences in working conditions
and in phases' sequences.  An Artificial Neural Networks recognizes
tasks' phases by using force data.  Two network architectures have
been tested.  The first one is based on turning temporal sequences
into spatial patterns.  The second architecture extends the first
model by including network's output in the input array.  Experimental
data are classified off-line by a Hidden Markov Model providing the
transition times and the corresponding segmentation for the training
data.  We found that the first architecture needs a high number of
iterations for learning the associations, while the latter has a high
convergency speed.

                      POST DOCTORAL POSITION IN 
                     COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE

                      UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

        
A post-doctoral position is now available with Dr David
Willshaw at the Centre for Cognitive Science, University of Edinburgh.

David Willshaw has a small computational neuroscience research group,
funded principally by a Medical Research Council Programme Grant.  The
group uses analytic and computer simulation methods to investigate
problems in neurobiology that are tractable by theoretical means.
Research on neural network algorithms which have a relevance to the
neurobiological themes is also undertaken.

The present focus of research is on three topics.

1) An examination of the possible role of such structures as
the hippocampus, the cerebellum and the neocortex in associative
storage and retrieval of information.

2) The role of competitive mechanisms in the development of
connections in the neuromuscular system.

3) Models for the development of ordered connections in the visual
system; in particular, the development of retinotopic connections
and ocular dominance stripes.


The group has strong contacts with neuroscience research groups in
Edinburgh, particularly in the Departments of Physiology and
Pharmacology, and with the MRC Centre for Brain and Behaviour Research
at Oxford. It is at the centre of the lively neural networks
environment at Edinburgh, with excellent contacts with research groups
in Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Physics,
Psychology, Human Communication Research Centre, amongst others. The
group contributes to an undergraduate degree in neuroscience and to a
post-graduate course on neural networks.

Anyone interested in this position is invited to contact David
Willshaw for more information and with a brief outline of relevant
interests and experience.  The group uses a small network of Sun
Workstations and Xterminals, and experience of these would be a strong
advantage.  

The post is funded according to the AR1A postdoctoral scale (annual
salary 12129 - 19328 pounds) and is tenable for three years in the
first instance, renewable for a further two years.

         ON THE USE AND REPRESENTATION OF SENSORY INFORMATION 
                OF THE ARM BY ROBOTS AND HUMANS

Robots and humans use mechanical sensory information from the arm in control of
the arm as well as in perception of mechanical properties of the arm and
external objects.  This thesis looks at the use and representation of sensory
information in control and perception of robotic and human arms.  One observa-
tion is that humans are capable of purposeful movement in the absence of sen-
sory information whereas most robots are not.  This difference in robustness to
sensory deprivation is shown to be attributable to a difference in the under-
lying stability properties of the actuators.  A preliminary actuator design is
presented that is robust to deprivation of sensory information.

The issue of representation of information is important in any discussion of
computation.  A series of experiments were performed to look for evidence of
structure in the way humans represent mechanical information.  The principal
hypothesis tested was that human perception of mechanical qualities is dis-
torted in a locally linear, metrically consistent manner, as is commonly
assumed in robotic control schemes.  Five perception experiments and two motor
control experiments were performed.  In the perception experiments subjects
made judgements about mechanical properties of objects simulated by a planar
robot.  In the first motor control experiment subjects drew circles.  In the
second experiment subjects interacted with circular constraints simulated by
the robot.

The principal hypothesis is shown to be false.  The perceptual and motor beha-
vior observed in the experiments could not be explained by a single, unifying,
locally linear metric.  Two positive results of the experiments are:  (1)  The
so-called tangential-radial illusion, where radial distances are perceived to
be longer than equal tangential distances, is misnamed.  Although human per-
ception of length is distorted on the order of 20% and repeatable among sub-
jects, there is nothing special about the tangential and radial directions.
(2)  The shapes drawn in the circle drawing experiment were consistent with
those predicted by the length perception experiment.  This suggests that both
behaviors are manifestations of a common, underlying phenomenon.

     A new research/training program supported by the Flinn
Foundation will commence January 1, 1993.  We are now recruiting
three post-doctoral fellows for a period of up to three years
each.  Trainees with a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree will participate
in an interdisciplinary research program on The Adaptation and
Computational Characteristics of Motor Coordination.  The
research program involves faculty from Arizona State University
and Division of Neurobiology at the Barrow Neurological Institute
in the Phoenix metropolitan area.  Major areas of research focus
are:  Motor control deficits in Parkinsons Disease, Cerebellar
Dysfunctions, Sensorimotor Impairments in the Elderly,
Computational Biomechanics, Motor Learning, and adaptational
characteristics of Motor Coordination. The stipends are

George, it is nice to see that your program is thriving! As you may know
(e.g. from Dave or Jim) during the summer my wife, who is a medical doctor,
was looking for a first year residency and therefore I pushed the ASU guys
to a decision if they want me there or not. They had money problems, thus
declined, when pressed. Since that time I have not been in close touch
thus I don't really know what came out of the plans for a true "sensorimotor
coordination" (as it were...)

What are you guys up to?

Hi:

I am currently trying to look into the effects of whole-body vibration on
balance (vestibular, visual and proprioceptive system).  Because I am going to
run a pilot study during the summer, I would like to know if anyone out there
has experience with similar experiments.  In a nutshell:  I expose human
subjects to sinusoidal vibration and monitor muscle activity before, during and
after the vibration exposure and a stabilometry test.

While I was going over the literature, I could not get around the immense
amount of work done on segmental vibration and there are several studies that
caught my eye because of the fact that they showed a systemic response to local
(segmental) vibration.  Symptoms were not only found at the the site of
exposure (the hands) but also in the feet, for example.  I am curious if anyone
could tell me if similar findings are known for whole-body vibration.  
after quite a few articles, I could not find anything of that nature, but then
again, it seems that we are not all that sure about the injury mechanism that
causes whole-body vibration related diseases.

I would appreciate any response, and will let you know what happens with our
experiments.

The Twelfth International Symposium on Posture and Gait is making its
second call for papers.  The subject of the symposium, to be held in
Matsumoto, Japan on October 3-7, 1994, is "Posture and Gait:  Vestibular
and Neural Front."  The official language is English.

Papers may be presented orally, by poster, or by video (VHS, NTSC).  Topics
of the keynote lectures and papers include:  New devices and diagnostic
contribution of postural and locomotion measurement;  Development and aging
in posture and gait;  Physical training, exercises and rehabilitation; 
Biomechanical model of posture and gait;  Autonomic nervous system and
other effects on posture and locomotion;  Neural mechanisms of posture and
gait;  Nystagmus and abnormal eye movements in relation to body
equilibrium;  space and posture.

A message from a graduate student requesting an administrative
service was recently broadcast to neuromotor-control@ai.mit.edu.  
In order to prevent this from happening again in the future, I 
have added a moderator for messages from non-list-members  to the
rest of the list.  I believe that the program implementing the 
interposition is functioning correctly, and that there will be no 
further disquieting of our relative tranquility.  I could, however, 
be entirely and tragically wrong on that point.  As one must in any

     ABSTRACT: A hypothesis about sensorimotor integration (the lambda
     model) is described and applied to movement control and
     kinesthesia.  The nervous system organizes positional frames of
     reference for the sensorimotor apparatus and produces active
     movements by shifting frames in terms of spatial coordinates.
     Kinematic and electromyographic patterns are not programmed but
     emerge from the dynamic interaction of the system's components,
     including external forces, within the designated frame of
     reference. Motoneuronal threshold properties and proprioceptive
     inputs to motoneurons may be important components in the
     physiological mechanism which produces positional frames of
     reference.  The hypothesis that intentional movements are produced
     by shifting the frame of reference is extended to multi-muscle and
     multi-degrees of freedom systems by providing a solution for the
     redundancy problem the allows the control of a joint alone or in
     combination with other joints to produce any desired limb
     configuration and movement trajectory. For each motor behavior, the
     nervous system uses a strategy which minimizes the number of
     changeable control variables and keep sthe parameters of these
     changes invariant. This is illustrated by examples of simulated
     kinematic and electromyographic signals from single- and
     multi-joint arm movements produced by patterns of control
     variables. Empirical support is provided and additional tests are
     suggested. The model is contrasted with others based on the ideas
     of programming of motoneuronal activity, muscle forces, stiffness
     or movement kinematics.

The Engineering Foundation announces its 9th conference on
"Biomechanics and Neural Control of Movement."  The intent of
this conference series, which began in 1967, is to increase
the level of interaction between engineering and life
sciences so that each may benefit from the approaches and
findings of the other fields.  The life sciences have
benefitted from the quantitative and analytical approach to
movement control problems characteristic of engineering. 
Likewise, the engineering sciences have benefitted from the
knowledge of how nature has solved similar motor control
problems. In addition to the integrated nature of the formal
presentations, the structure of these conferences 
fosters close informal interaction by providing time for ad
hoc sessions and discussions in a relaxed setting.
