Subject: RE: Pregnancy & curvature

I only found out about my scoliosis when I was an adult (31 or so), and
this was diagnosed as a 'oh, by the way' issue when I was having some
back aches and went to the chiropractor. I didn't know what the
implications were, and the chiropractor didn't tell me at the time, but
since my back aches didn't really go away, I decided to monitor it as
much as I could. I can only remember the first time I heard the
chiropractor say scoliosis, he said I had a 'slight' scoliosis. The
second time I was X-rayed, I remember the measurements being 14 degrees.
The third time x-rayed, it was 19 degrees - perhaps 3 years later. I
became pregnant at 39, and had no problems with my back during
pregnancy, although in the last trimester, I had pelvic pain and it was
pretty bad - like a pinched nerve when I walked. After the delivery of
my daughter, I felt completely disassembled. I had terrible foot pain,
and creaky/cracky joints, and a very weak back. I had extra weight
(about 20 lbs.) which I believe contributed to the apparent 'worsening'
of my curve. The next time I got an x-ray, the measurement was 37
degrees. I have been to many specialists, and most say this is a
'natural' degradation. They have told me that as an adult with
scoliosis you can expect a degradation of 1 to 1.5 degrees annually. I
have only recently (and partially because of the participation in this
list) become aware of the fact that my daily living habits can probably
affect the scoliosis negatively (I don't think we can reverse it,
unfortunately). But I believe that, for example, long-term smoking
habits and being overweight can negatively influence, that is, increase
the rate of degradation of your scoliosis. Depending on your age and
your condition, pregnancy may also influence it, and being overweight
probably also does. It is something we always have to work on - keeping
as fit as possible so that the scoliosis is minimally affected. I sadly
got smart a little bit too late! (But better late than never:-))

     Hi Carla,
Thanks for the reply--that is encouraging! I have seen you on here
many times before but I get people mixed up--are you fused or did you
wear a brace? As far as epidurals go--ugh! I never thought about
that. Hope I have the option. I'm brave when I know I have a way

     Hi Elise,
Thanks for the info! That's interesting that the doctor didn't
attribute your changes to your pregnancies. Have you had surgery or
did you ever wear a brace?

Very well said. And just to add, nutritian (spelling, sorry) is important for
all children. My ped. is very big on it. Part of the wellness check is asking
about their diet, likes and dislikes. He has tried in vein to get my daughter
to eat her veggies, she now will eat some but it is still a fight. (she is 7)
Nutritian is important for the whole child, not only their spine. I am lucky
with my ped, and therefore when we moved 2 1/2 years ago I continue to take my
kids there, even though it is a shlep and a half. I have the number of a local
ped in case of a real emergancy but our Ped is one of those that will be
avalable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if needed. He took in a partner several
years ago that we love as well. They both are willing to listen to the
parent's concerns, I mean really listen. I needed to get a hold of them once
at 130 am on a sat. night. My son was very ill, well he called me back inless
then a minute after calling his service. This wonderful Dr. gave me options on
the phone for treating my son, who had a bad reaction to an antibotic and had
become so dehydrated, in hours (he was nine months old)that his soft spot had
caved in, and his tears dried up. This wonderful Dr. told me how to treat him
at home, or I could take him to the hospital, or to HIS home for care. That is
a caring Doctor. He also went to his office at 8 am on Sunday morning to see
my son. ( I chose to try to rehydrate him at home.) This Dr. is one of the
best. They are watching my children very carefully for Scoliosis, and they
have ordered tests when I have asked about them, regardless if they feel it is
possable. My son has ADD and I had read about thyroid problems that have the
same symtoms as add, he had the test done, even though he felt it was a very
long shot as Geoff had no symtoms of thyroid problems, it was neg. He did a
lead screening at the same time. I was lucky to find them, they always
research any concerns that I bring up to them and get back to me right away.
Sorry this went on so long, I degreesed alot, but my point is still this.
Nutrition is important, so is a that listens to you and your child, even if
they do not agree they should listen to your view and take you seriosly.

I'm doing a report on it for my Senior Human Body class. I picked it
because my younger brother has scoleosis. If you could possibly send me a
list of good internet sites i would appreciate it greatly.

Linda and others,

I don't think that we should be criticizing Sanet for working too hard. =
I don't think that she is. She is excited about what she is able to do =
and wants to share that information with us. I am sure that there are a =
million things that she cannot do, but she has not described them.

Myself and other recent surgery people have posted a lot our =
experiences. On a good day we describe the things that we can do and we =
are happy that we are able to do these things. Then we are criticized =
for doing to many activities. But we haven't described the whole =
picture because there are many things that we cannot do, and we know =
enough not to do them.

On a bad day we might describe some difficulty that we are having, or =
pain that we are experiencing. Then people think that we are down all =
the time, depressed and miserable. Again we have not described the =
whole picture, we just wanted to share that bit of information.

I know that we are all friendly here and the advice is well-meant. But =
I don't think that we should be so quick to judge a person based on the =
minimal information that is provided.

Subject: Post Op Joint Pain

Has anyone had any problems with Post Op pain in their joints (elbows,
hands, hips, knees, etc). In the past when I had problems with some drugs
one of the side-effects was joint pain. In the last two weeks, I have come
to feel like a little old lady with arthritis everywhere.

Could this be a reaction to all the new instrumentation in my body? Does
anyone know what the symptoms are for being allergic to the instrumentation?
I asked the doctor about this before the surgery because I have allergies to
some metals. He told me not to worry about it. I saw somewhere the mention
of possible allergic reaction to the instrumentation. But I don't think it
was on this site.

It has been raining for the last week and I miss my walks. Otherwise I get
more mobile all the time (even with the joint pain). I had a bout with some
sort of virus and throwing up became an art. Sort of like the coughing
exercises the Physical Theraphist put you through in the hospital right
after the surgery. No fun!!!

I snuck out the other morning and made a run to Wal-Mart. I discovered I am
not quite ready for trips on my own yet. My kids had a good time chewing me
out and took away my car keys!! Oh well. :) At least they care. I just
wanted to see what it would be like to get out and around.

I like the idea of the pictures to take to work. I am going to get a copy
of one of the x-rays at my 6 week visit and take it with me when I start
back to work. I will hang it in my cubicle as a reminder. I had a hard
enough time with anyone believing me when I was in so much pain before the
surgery. Maybe this will shut them up. Sigh. I have not taken any pain
pills and I see that I am getting grouchy.

How strange to me, that you took my advice to Sanet as criticism. I seriosly
doubt that her doctor's instructions included cleaning the house if she felt
like it. During the first few months post-op, hooks can easily be dislodged
and screws can come loose. I would hate for Sanet, or anyone else, to have
that happen.

Your symptoms are, I believe, much more likely to be caused by the fact that
you're spending a lot of time laying down, and are not as active as you were
pre-surgery. My entire body was very sore for several months after surgery.
I also found that I had far less energy than normal for at least the first
year post-op.

Regards,
Linda

Marla-

No one was criticizing Sanet. The advice was well intended and caring.
One thing that I have discovered about this list is that there is great
concern and a wealth of information shared by all. Many of the people
on this list have learned from past experiences, or are quite
knowledgeable about certain situations and that should certainly be
passed on.
I believe we all wish those planning on surgery and recovering from
surgery much success.
I for one look forward to receiving all advice--solicited and
unsolicited-from members of this list.

Since Rich asked, I'm coming out with
what happened at my Dr. Kostuik
appointment. I guess people on this
list should know about these kinds of
things.

Dear Rich,

> >Dr. Kostuik even yelled at me when I told him I was a
> >member of this Scoliosis Mailing List for support and made it clear he
> didn't
> ...

I really wasn't going to go into my very negative second appointment with
Dr. Kostuik to get his surgery plan for me on this List, but since I've
been asked, I'll give a brief synopsis. After I had seen him in August, I
had pretty well made up my mind that he would be my surgeon because he
seemed technically on top of everything (even though his attitude was very
authoritarian) and Johns Hopkins is also a very impressive and
well-organized facility. This is despite the fact that he told me NOT to
seek any other opinions--apparently a common tactic of his and one I
naturally disobeyed. I'm not the idiot I was in 1990 when I didn't get a
second opinion on my fusion extension to the sacrum, which I know now was
a very bad decision given my problems at the time.

When Dr. Kostuik came in to see me at this second appointment, his staff
had apparently got me confused with somebody else who had called earlier
that day & told him I had cancelled my appointment. So he started it off
by basically accusing me of lying--making a call to cancel my appointment
in the midst of my 4-hour drive from NJ!--and everything went downhill
from there. First, he didn't want to answer any questions with
specifics. For example, when I asked what rods he intended to use, he
just said there were "100s of kinds" and refused to tell me details. He
berated me for "getting information from the Internet" and talking to
other Scoliosis patients in spinal fusion failure. When I asked if he
thought balancing my hips in the biplanar osteotomy would relieve the pain
in my S-I joints that has kept me from sitting for 15 years, he started in
ridiculing my pain and made the remark that 50% of the population had the
same kind of pain I was experiencing. (Yeah, right--in the knees, hips,
upper back, arms, hands, and neck???) He even made an off-handed remark
that he could do great things, but he couldn't do anything about my hair,
with the implication that he didn't like how I was wearing it. Then after
I expressed some reservations about the surgery because of fear of another
operation, he started yelling that perhaps I was not a good candidate for
revision and he didn't want to operate on someone who was afraid. My
husband, who thankfully was there with me, found the whole thing
unbelievable and said if he hadn't been with me, he never would have
believed a doctor--any doctor--could have behaved that way to a patient.
We left in an extremely depressed state.

Naturally, I will not now have surgery with Dr. Kostuik and have chosen
Dr. Boachie, in whom I have a much better relationship. Yes, Allison is
right when she says these surgeons are working for US and should treat us
with respect and at least a degree of compassion. In any case, the whole
Kostuik thing threw me for such a loop and created so much anxiety in me
about revision surgery that my local spinal surgeon recommended I get
better prepared mentally for it by seeing a medical psychologist. I also
have an appointment with a pain control team next week with the
recommendation that I go on antidepressants/antianxiety medication, which
is something I've tried HARD to avoid. I don't think any of this would
have happened had I not been so badly treated by Dr. Kostuik. I had felt
FULLY prepared for the revision and was even looking forward to it!!

Unfortunately, I know I am not the only one this sort of thing has
happened to, because I got emails from some other patients on this List
who had similar experiences with Kostuik, Bradford & others. I guess now
we know why Dr. Kostuik didn't want me talking to any of his other
patients!

It is a shame that Adults with Scoliosis are often treated so badly by the
surgeons who are supposed to be amongst the best in the field for
complicated cases. Meanwhile, we're caught between a rock and a hard
place having to decide whether to surrender our bodies to the knives of
these hardened doctors.

Elizabeth

Hi Bonnie,
Iatrogenic means caused by medical treatment. The origin is from the
Greek iatros for physician and genic meaning produced or generated.
(I'm fascinated by the derivation and evolution of language.) For
example, flatback is an iatrogenic condition. I had a neurological
complication as well as flatback, and developed chronic pain within a
few months of my fusion. I ended up having three surgeries, and a
fourth has been recommended. The complications I could accept. It is
what I consider deceit by the surgeon concerning my long term prognosis
that primarily causes my lingering anger. The reason I consider it
deceit is the story I was told at 18 changed dramatically years later.
At 18 I was told this would be resolved and not to compromise my
ambitions as I'd be able to pursue any career I wanted. There was no
hint that these problems would be life long. Years later, I was told
matter of factly that these problems are due to the spinal cord
complication discovered when I was 15 and permanent. If he'd just told
me the truth at 18, I wouldn't be nearly as angry (if at all). I liked
him and trusted him as a teenager. I make mistakes, consequently I
don't beat up anyone for that. But I wouldn't deceive anyone about my
error, and I'd do my best to be accountable and minimize the impact on
the other person. That's just plain being honorable.

I don't think all doctors are bad people. The orthopod that I go to
currently is one of the most decent people I've ever known. I count
among my good friends a physician. But this experience has caused me to
be very cognizant of a physician's motivation. Alyssa

change your spine let me just add my own humble opioion, I think it would be
worth it. I Would have done it anyway, even if I thought it would have
effected my spine. Being fusied, I had been told no more than 3 pregnancies. I
have 2 wonderful healthy kids and am happy I did. It may have ( I will never
know) increased my pain levels but even if that was what made it worse it was
worth it. I would never give up the chance to be a mom.

Logan: Here's a Starter List for you. I'm working on a PowerMac, so if
you are on an IBM-comp, you may have trouble opening it (if so, let me
know). It is a Netscape document.
The best thing that I found to do is to find a good site, and just
start bookmarking and following links for hours at a time. It'll take
you a while...
If you are doing your project to find out info for your little brother
(good for you!), it might help you to know whether his scoliosis is
congenital (cause known, like spinal cord problems or vertebra
malformation) or idiopathic (cause unknown).
Good luck! Let me know if you need more sites!
- --hmc.
p.s. I don't know if I have it bookmarked, but look up the National
Scoliosis Foundation's site. They will probably be of more use to you
(you can call them fot info pamphlets, etc.) than the medical abstract
search sites (the first few listed in the document I forwarded: Grateful
Med, Medline, etc.)

Ok, so should we use NCC or OT?
Rich, is there an official procedure for this? When we decide, could it
be added to the FAQ's on the Scoli. Mailing List webpage?
That is, of course, assuming that we think it's a good idea.
Personally, I like it, and think it would cut down on some irate
postings!
Anyone out there got an opinion?

Well said, Leah!!

I totally agree with you. I Have 2 wonderful children ( 4 and 3) and
although my spine got much worse after my son's birth I don't regret it a
single bit. IT IS definitely worth it...
By the way, you sent us (a while ago) an article on "ATTITUDE" I found
marvellous, but for some reason I can't find it anymore (I might have
erased it by mistake) Could you send it again please?? If you don't want to
send it again to the mailing list, please e-mail me privately:

Kat -- I have had two children. After my first child was born, I was
x-rayed and the film showed that the curves had not progressed. I don't
know if my curves have increased due to the second pregnancy since I
haven't yet been x-rayed since my second daughter's birth. As far as adult
progression goes -- my doctor told me that I could expect the curvature to
progress at the rate of one degree every TEN years. But I don't think that
doctors can really predict curve progression with any accuracy since it
seems that some peoples' curves are just fated to get worse, while others'
will not. My doctor may have told me one degree per ten years since my
curves were both under 30 degrees at that point, but as we've learned from
other posts, some folks with very minor curves have experienced substantial
progression as adults.

Hi,
I saw the note below from Leah, and wanted to join in to say my daughter was
worth all the health problems I took on. I have not had my spine evaluated
since I was 16, after my second fusions (I'm now 39), but my back pain has
increased since my daughter was born 3 years ago. My pregnancy also brought
on the onset on Meniere's Disease (an inner ear disorder that causes vertigo
and nausea, and can lead to permanent dizziness and deafness). Despite all
this I am so glad I had my little girl, it was all worth it. I will not have
more children because all my chronic conditions (I have others) can be
worsened, and I need to stay as healthy as possible for my one child. But I'd
do it all again just to have her.

change your spine let me just add my own humble opioion, I think it would be

These are my doctor's written instructions (amoungst others):
"You might be more comfortable sitting in an arm chair which is not to low.
No sports for 12 weeks.
Only light housework for 6 weeks.
No driving for 12 weeks.
No swimming for 6 weeks, then check with your doctor."
And, that's what I've been doing: "light housework"

Hi Linda,

Boy, did this come at a good time for me! I am 11and 1/2 months post op and
feeling relatively pain free so am pretty much back to a so-called normal
life, with restrictions such as being careful, not lifting, watching that I
don't aggravate anything by sitting too long, etc. So I have a pretty full
day, but I get so tired so easily! I had begun to think that I aged a lot in
the two years since I've been able to have a busy day and started to think my
lack of energy is solely age related. When you said "...at least a year", it
made me think that I still have some time to go before I need to reconcile
myself to my current energy level.

Thank you!

Hi Robin,

This is not entirely scientific, of course, :-), but perhaps your pain is the
result of the combination of your being so close to surgery and a week of
rain.

Hi Robin
I found your mail to be very interesting. In the beginning of your letter
you mention that you've had this kind of pain in the past and it was drug
related. Could it be that it's the drugs that is causing this pain? I don't
know what the reaction to the instrumentation would be, but I would guess
that it would be the same as for any other allergy (localized
symptoms -pain, swelling, inflammation, redness, -as well as systemic). I
don't know about others on the list, but I definitely find with a high
humidity (like when it rains as you mention), I find that my kneejoints pain
(I have no known knee problems) and could that be the reason for your pain?
I know the medical profession laughs this one off, but I feel the whether in
my left knee?!
I haven't had any of the pains you mention since my surgery 4 weeks ago,
except my left knee the past day or so (and we are experiencing a high
humidity, nothing new). If I were in your shoes, I would definitely seek
professional help.
