Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the summer!  I havent written in 
for a while so I thought I would update you all on how Taylor is doing.  She 
has been post -surgery about three months, and has adjusted well to the 
brace.  She also took her first steps this week to!  We saw the doctor about 
two weeks ago, she is not fused yet but the instrumentation is holding in 
place.  She can't get the brace wet, so she has put her feet in the water, 
which she loved!.  I guess it is not as bad as she is still so young and 
doesn't know what she is missing!  

Jennifer, mom to Taylor, 14 1/2 months, cong scol, fusions, hemivert. 
resection with instrumentation, VATER...

Dear Penina,

I could not have said it any better than you.  I am going through exactly the 
same thing with my just 16 year old daughter Naomi.  Her surgery is June 25 
at Gillette Hospital in St. Paul, MN.  It is a good 7 hour drive from home 
which is Omaha, NE.  We did a lot of searching before we decided on Dr. 
Lonstein to do her surgery.  My two daughters Rachel 19 and Aliya almost 13 
will be home for about 9 days alone.  My family and friends are here to help 
them out.

I am also a teacher.  Naomi and her sisters went to a concert here in May.  
NSync and I don't know how many other groups were here.  Naomi is looking 
forward to being able to dance at her younger sister's Bat Mitzvah the end of 
August.  She is also motivated to recover so she can dance with her high 
school Pom Squad as soon as possible.

  Frank is in my prayers and I'm sure he'll be fine! I have a good feeling
that he will make it thru this operation with no problems! I have had 2
major open heart surgery's and 4 pacemaker changes so i understand your
worries. ( i have had 7 surgerys in all because of my back)

Subject: sports for us older ones

I have a question about sports for anyone, but especially those of us over 
40.  For those of you that have been fused a year or more, can you or have 
you been able to do any sports such as golf or tennis?  I love to play golf 
and yesterday I picked up the tennis racket and hit a few balls.  I was just 
wondering if I would be able to do this after my revision surgery in which 
the fusion will be from T4 to L5.

Subject: Christopher's update

Hi everyone,

Last Thursday we returned to duPont to discuss Christopher's CT scan and
surgery recommendation.  The scan turned out to be very helpful as it
narrowed down the surgical options to just one - A/P fusion - in our
ortho's opinion.  We are scheduled for November and preparing for 6 months
in a body cast.  In the meantime we will be getting a second opinion from
Hopkins where we had our "first" 2nd opinion after Christopher was
diagnosed.  Hopefully they will concur again.  Has anyone had experience
getting surgical opinions "by mail"?  Also, how many surgeries do you think
a surgeon should have performed for a parent to feel comfortable - I know
there are no magic numbers but I want to feel confident.

By the way, when we went for Christopher's CT scan, we stayed at the Ronald
McDonald House across from the hospital.  What a wonderful experience -
they perform a great service to families.

It will probably be physically possible for you to play golf and tennis.
 And, a lot of post-surgery people do.  You should know, however, that
you greatly increase your chances of having to have additional surgery
by doing anything that puts extra stress on the discs above and below
the fusion.

Every surgeon does something a little different than the next guy.  It's
impossible to really say how any one surgeon decides exactly what
approach and hardware they'll use.  Posterior only or anterior only
surgeries are usually for patients with fairly flexible spines. 
Combined anterior/posterior surgeries are usually for individuals with
less flexibility.  The type of curve(s), quality of the discs and
vertebrae, and levels included in the curve would also be factors in a
surgeon's decision.  

In my experience, if you talk to two different surgeons, you have a very
good chance of having them suggest two different procedures.  I'm sure
there are some people who get tired of me saying this, but my suggestion
is to find a surgeon whom you can trust, and let them do whatever they
feel is best.  Unless you've gone to medical school and probably done a
spine residency  and/or fellowship, it's impossible to know if one
procedure is better than another.  You'll read good and bad about all
types of hardware and approaches.  If you try to get too involved in
determining what procedure to have, you'll only serve to confuse the issue.

For over three months, Ultram was the perfect drug for *my* pain.
Didn't make me drowsy like panadeine forte. After 3 months on it, I
began very ill, not able to keep any food down. I went to casualty,
they did tests, nothing wrong. Was still sick, came back, so they said
it's likely to be the Ultram, as it's often prescribed with
anti-sickness tablets in the first place. I was given some Maxillon,
whihc I had an allergic reaction to & had to leave my own engagament
party, but that's another story!

Anyway, my point is that I was on a cocktail of prescribed drugs, so
it may have been an interaction, or it may have been the Ultram, my
pain doc has no idea. Everyone's pain & body is different! I am now on
Methedone post-op. Ignore the bad hype about it. If you need to take
it for your pain, take it! Your doctor wont let you get 'addicted'.
The thing is to not stop it cold turkey, to gradually reduce the dose,
but your doctor should tell you all this anyway. I'm now on a lower
dose than I was pre- op, which is encouraging, and I'm looking forward
to the day when I'm med free!!! Whoohoo!!


Scarlet - I'll post an 3 week update on my removal of rods soon! I got
your email Ian & will get back to you soon. I've got 600 in the list
to go....
