Subject: Copes brace in summer

This is my first summer in the Copes brace. I live in South Carolina
and it has been very hot, nearly 100 everyday since July and very little
rain. I can be out of the brace for 6 hours a day so if I need to be out
in the heat I can take it off. Typically, I wear the brace until 5 or 6
pm and am out of it in the evening hours because I am generally working
indoors during the day. If I am running errands from the car to the
store I do tend to sweat more than I would without the brace. I am not
hot natured so I think that helps. I don't think that it has been a
terrible experience. I got used to it and I really don't get over
heated. Good luck. It really has been worth it for me. Let me just say
that wearing the brace is such a major inconvenience both socially and
psychologically that if it did not work I sure as heck would not
continue to wear it!!!! Mary Jo

Stop the presses : I have read -- and experienced-- that it is the magnesium in
chocolate that some women crave right before their periods, or, indeed, at any
time. Because of the way it is chemically structured, the magnesium in
chocolate is easy for our bodies to absorb. Though I can't stop a
Chocoholic-DO-Or-Die fit, if I notice that my taste for chocolate is
increasing, I up my intake of nightly Mag. and Calcium. ANd it goes away. Works
for my mom, too, and she's menopausal.
As to the copper content, I wasn't familiar with that at all. If some peple
with scoli. already have high levels of copper in their bodies, why would they
crave more?

Subject: Diane re: follow up to old surgery

Diane,
I required no followup after one or two years out from Harrington rod surgery
in 1984. Fifteen years later I, too, have major problems and am investigating
options for revision surgery.
Please describe the problems you are having.
Harrington rods are not commonly used anymore to correct scoliosis because
they leave the fused portion of the spine straight, or flat, in profile,
which can lead to something called "flatback syndrome" over the long term.
Today spines are corrected/fused to balance the spine in both the side and
frontal views . If you will tell us where you live, list members may be able
to suggest revision surgeons for you to consult for a diagnosis. It's good to
get multiple opinions, because sometimes the docs do not agree.

For more information about flatback syndrome, check out
orthospine.com/hottopics/flat_back.htm

Please stay in touch.

Regards,
Barbara

Diane,

I had my surgery in 1985, T5-L4. I did have follow-up visits. First the
follow-ups were every 6 months, then once a year and finally once every two
years. So when problems started to occur in 1996 my doctor was right on
it.

Holly,
I'm so sorry you have to deal with all that! I hope everything goes all
right with your surgery. I hated having surgery. It must be so awful to
have surgery and then find out that you have to go through it again. What
kind of instrumentation are they using? How long is the fusion going to be?
Good luck with your surgery!

Diane - That sounds like what happened to me after my harrington Rod surgery
in 1981. I got the same "no horseback riding" comment!!! I didn't have any
problems until 1991 or 1992. I had been going for 5 year check-ups and it
was during one of those that it was discovered my rod had broken - wasn't
experiencing any problems, so didn't think too much about it. Within the
year, I started have lower back problems and had test after test which showed
nothing wrong (actually I found out later, there WERE signs of problems, but
since they weren't problems an ortho thought he could fix, they weren't
mentioned to me!!!)

it wasn't until I hooked up with Dr. kostuik that I found I wasn't crazy and
had legitimate reasons for the pain I'm in. There are several good doctors
mentioned on this list as well as those on the scoliosis web site. Don't
stop looking for a solution until you find a doctor who listens to you and
assures you there are reasons for your pain and ways to fix it!!! Keep at
them!!!

best wishes--

Yesterday, Sunday, was day 4 post op after stage 2 surgery.
She is doing wonderfully. She is walking around the halls 3-4 times a day
plus assorted jaunts around the room. Going to the toilet and sink by
herself. Getting in and out of bed by herself (thanks to all who suggested
bringing "slippery" bed clothes to the hospital). Sitting at her table to
eat. Yesterday the PT took her for a walk up the stairwell. She has been off
the PCA for a few days. She did have a bad night Saturday painwise , it seems
the oral meds were not lasting or strong enough. Sunday morning she spoke to
Dr. Pashman and he got on the horn and revised her meds instructions and she
was feeling much better in the afternoon when I was there. Yesterday they
were talking about her going home Tuesday or Wednesday./

Hi,

I'm the one with the short note re Harrington rod sugery in 1967, much
pain and degeneration now. Thanks for some of your responses.
I'm not sure that revision surgery is really an option for me since I
went through early menopause, age 39-45 years, and only found out last
October that I have lost 28% bone mass - osteopenia. I am now trying to
find some quality of life. I have finally applied for Long Term
Disability and am awaiting results. It is a tense time dealing with
Insurance Companies. I worked in pain for 13 years, lots of meds, etc.
but reached the end. Are the rest of you working full-time? I was (am)
a teacher and was very dedicated to my job. It was a very difficult
decision emotionally but physically I know it's the right thing for me.

Buy one with handlebars and hang on; it's much safer that way.

I was told that there was some discussion (which I obviously missed) not

anything about them?
I'm not too worried about falling off. I like the idea of being able to
vary my speed, walking indoors and even watching a little T.V. while I
exercise.

What helped me was right down the hours you wear it the first couple weeks,
and you can see which hours felt most comfortable, for example the first
couple of days 15 hours was the most I wore it. So wear it that many hours
and add a few hours every few days until your up to the right hours.
 good luck!
Liz

Subject: Re: Follow-up after Surgery

Diane,

I had my original surgery (T3-L2) in 1963, by Dr. Harrington and I also was
told I could do everything except ride (actually I was just not allowed to
fall
off!) horses or do gymnastics. I started having problems in my early 40's.
Because the discs degenerate beneath your lowest fusion level due to the
amout of movement at these locations, the need to extent your fusion is
quite predictable. I agree that I was also given no warning of this
probable development. I even went back to Harrington's original clinic and
saw Drs. Dickson and Erwin and neither of these surgeons gave me the
information about degenerative disc disease, flatback concerns that would be
increased by extending my fusion, or any of the other information an adult
needs who has had a fusion for 35 years. The information from this list has
now equipped me to find the surgeons and to know the pros and cons of the
possible procedures I may need.

I welcome you to this list. You are fortunate that you have found these
resources before you have made any mistakes about having the wrong surgery
or, perhaps having the correct surgery done by the wrong surgeon. Where do
you live? There are many of us here who have similiar medical histories and
who are about your same age. I also was diagnosed with osteoporosis and
started HRT prior to menopause due to my excessive bone mass loss. There are
still many options to consider. Please seek out more information.

Stay in touch,
Jennifer

Hey Cassy--
Well, I've been wearing my brace for about a month...and I'm pretty used to
it. In the beginning..I hated it! I thought the waist area of my brace was
too tight, i couldn't hardly move, etc. but now, sometimes I forget it's
even on (except for those darn itches...)! Ok...believe it or not...I
actually like wearing it sometimes because when I'm out of it...my back seems
to...how should i say it....sag? LOL...yeah it's sounds strange...but my
back sways to the side and it feels kinda awkward...but in my brace, I have
really good posture. OK talk to ya later!

Diane,

I understand your position. I just retired as a principal of an
elementary school. Teaching is even more physically and emotionally taxing.
I felt the stress and long hours were not worth it. But for me also it
was not an easy decision. I'm 57 so I was close to the age I wanted to
retire. A teacher is always "on" so dealing with the job and pain is alot.
I experienced it last year when I was leaning forward from my first
surgeries. The screws came out and I got worse and worse as the year
progressed. Don't know how I did it but I know I didn't want to continue.
Thankfully, the revision surgery I had 4 months ago was successful and I can
heal without worrying about when I should start again. The best to you.

                          Georgina
