Don... I had scoliosis surgery with Harrington Rod twenty yeats ago - I am now 55 years old. I have never felt the rod. I am fused to L4 and can bend to pick things up off the floor. I can't touch my toes, but some people on this list with long fusions cliam that they can. I'm sure that clinically, I've had a loss of mobility/flexibility, but nothing that I can't compensate for. I was going to wait until next week but I have time so here goes: It is much worse than expected. When Dr. Cowan took a new x-ray the curves have progressed 50%. I was devastated yesterday and cried all the way home. I was angry at myself for putting it off for so long and at my husband for not being here with me at this time. My upper curve is 75 degrees (I thought 35) and my bottom is 103 degrees (I thought 55). The last xray 7 years ago said the bottom one was 55 degrees. Anyway he says he can fix it. Baystate Medical is very well equipped with a spinal cord monitor and he has got the experience. His worst curve to repair was 140 degrees. I am going to let him!! I feel that good about him. The surgery will be scheduled on Monday, shooting for late September/early October. It will take all day. Posterior/Anterior. He will remove 5 or more discs in the lower part and put the bone chips in to fuse. That is so far, my next appointment is September 12. Anyway, he uses a Danek (sp?) rod(s), the company bought out the C-D rod company, so it is C-D rods with hooks and Cross Links. a week in the hospital, 6-8 weeks at home. Sound good to me. He thinks he can get over 50% straightened, anything is better than this right now. My left side problem, pain etc. is caused by a couple twisted vertebrae in the lower curve probably pressing on a nerve. The x-rays were hideous. I couldn't believe this was me, though I knew it was. The rib hump should be eliminated with the fusion without a thoroplasty. I am still going through the shock this morning, but I will manage. I have alot to prepare for at home. I have family taking turns coming to help me from MD and my in-laws (yes, my wonderful in-laws), and my kids at least for the first 2 weeks. That is it so far. Something I haven't really shared with anyone I've met on the net is that i did wear the milwaukee brace for 6 months before surgery. Both of the braces were worn for 23 hours a day.
