This is decidedly NOT the case at the Shriners Hospitals. Our daughter's
care has been top notch and absolutely free.

Tania,
Having dealt with back pain as long as I have, I suggest you buy a bottle
of horse linament. Really, I'm serious. Go to your closest feed store and buy
a bottle of horse linament. Make sure you shower just before using it as it
draws anything on your skin into your bloodstream. You will also smell like
garlic but you won't have to worry about muscular aches and pains. Or
Vampires!:) M

Subject: Question before surgery
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Hello everyone,

I am a 48 years old man with scoliosis. I have been a quadriplegic
for the past 35 and have a 38 and 40 degrees S curve. I'm having
surgery because of hip pain and sitting stability problems. I will be
having a posterior spinal fusion from T2 to S1 next week on the 25th at
Ranch Los Amigos Medical Center, Downey, CA. I think they will be using
D-D instrumentation. I have normal sensation and am wondering what to
expect in the way of pain after surgery. I have worn a body jacket most
of that time and expect to continue using one after the surgery because
it provides abdominal support which helps with my breathing. I'm
wondering if the body jacket touching my back while sitting in a
wheelchair will cause a lot of pain? Is pain usually sharp like a pins
stick or is it more of a dull or throbbing ache. I work at home, on a
computer, as an electronic engineering consultant. I'm wondering how
long it will be before my a head is clear enough to think and I'm able
to set up long enough to work.

After reading about it here, I ordered the "Scoliosis Handbook" and
found it very helpful!!

All...

Most people have back pains at one time or another. A few also has
scoliosis but this doesn't neccessarily mean that the two are
correlated.
Ask any radiologist and they can show you horrendous backs of people
with no problems at all and perfect images of people with a lot of pain.
We all want life to be simple and makes this kind of simplistic
connections all the time.

Subject: Re: Pain & Exercising

Dear Tania,

Gooday mate!!! I'm sort of close to being Australian. My mother-in-law is
and my husband lived in Brisbane for about five years while a teenager.

If I were you, in my 20's and having pain now, I'd want to do more than
exercise. If I have known I had scolosis then, (and I was having pain then),
I would have pursued every avenue available to me.

First step would be to get a second opinion from another doctor because the
first one blew it big time. I'd try to get a scoliosis doctor. I don't think
it's "too late to do anything." From what I've read, your curve could
progress and you don't want that. Believe me!!!

Since the Copes treatment isn't available in Australia, then maybe you
should look into other types of braces if you don't want surgery. I'm
wearing a Boston brace and I am 45. It has helped a lot. There's a new brace
called the Providence brace that I just read about which you only wear at
night. Read the Bernrich e-mail on 9/21/97.

I guess what I trying to say is that you need to look into other options.
High impact aerobics is great but with your twisted ribs-gosh!!!

Take care and good luck!!!!!

From my own experience, I was running 5 miles a day when I was in my late
40's and told that other ways of exercising wd be of more benefit to me due
to my scoliosis. Of course I didn't listen, aand who knows if the
progression wd have been as great had I been swimming or biking rather than
the hard impact of running or high impact aerobics.
My only suggestion is that once you know you have a curve of any
significance, there are many better ways to get exercise than aerobics
Just a suggestion!

Subject: Myofacial Muscle Pain

I have finnaly been to the Orethapedic Surgon and started my Physical
Therapy... after my PT evaluation it has been decided that I have
Myofacial Muscle pain in the area of the top of my lumbar curve..

They are trying Naproxen (anti-inflamatory) and some exercises and
some other therapy... (they push on my back and spread their hands
apart??)

could someone explain Myofacial Pain the the trigger points and etc..
and also if anyone has had any luck treating this? I can't seem to
find much of anything on the net about it??

Is this related at all to my Scoliosis or is it acctually a different
condition?

Just because the largest curve posted to date is 60 degrees, that doesn't
mean yours won't be the record breaker. If you're really interested in
looking into Copes, don't let numbers stop you. Take the x-rays and find
out if you're a candidate. What if you are? Only the x-rays will tell.

I did water aerobics for a few years and loved it. My time schedules
started to get bogged down and I couldn't go anymore. If it worked,
yes, I got toned up beautifully but my curves worsened in 7 years and
I really have no clue whether this did it or not. I was told at the
beginning this was 100% better than land aerobics. Now after losing
50 pounds in over a years, I do the stationery bike and nautilus
weights. Surgery is scheduled October 6th but my spine doctor didn't
say whether that harmed it or not, just said if it hurts don't do it.
I need to be in shape for surgery.

Subject: hello

Hi
My name is Christine and I'm 10 years old. I have had three operations for
scoliosis.
one when I was 2 & a half & two more when I was 5 & a half. I started wearing
a brace when I was 6 months old, and fianally got out of it when I was six.

I am in fifth grade and I ski and take karate and swim and bike.

My doctor is Dr. John Hall at Boston Children's Hospital. I have been going
to him for almost 10 years.

I don't know any other kids with scoliosis and rods and fusion. I hope I can
meet some new friends on this list.

Bye,

Christine

Bill,

I have been going to a neuromuscular therapy center. A massage therapist
works on my head, neck and upper back for one full hour. They call it
myofacial massage. It really helps. I don't experience occasional pain
anymore. Of course, I do stretching and strengthening exercises. He also
taught me exercises to strengthen my shoulders and upper back.

I get a massage every 2-3 weeks. I wish it were more frequent, but I can't
afford it.

What I have been told so far is that Todd has restrictive lung disease
because of a neuromuscular problem that was caused from the surgery. He
received spinal cord damage during the surgery and had a lot of respiratory
problems immediately after the surgery. He was put on a ventilator after 2
days and also had 3 chest tubes for 3 weeks. He had pulmonary function tests
before the surgery and his lungs were normal. After the surgery the PFT's
show he only has 35% lung use. He is going to have some nerve testing done
to hopefully figure out exactly what has happened.
