Subject: I was out of line.

I guess I was a bit out of line with some of my comments. However there are
a few reasons why I feel this way. I have scoliosis. I have had three
surgeries now and the pain just keeps getting worse and worse. I had to give
up a career that I loved because I was no longer physically able to perform
my duties. Now I am told that there is nothing left to be done and I should
learn to live with the pain. The surgeons made a mistake with their
procedures 28 years ago and now I am paying for those mistakes. Considering
life expectancy that could translate into another 40 years or more of this.

Am I bitter about the surgery? I guess I am a bit. I sure wish I had had
surgery in more recent years when they have solved some of the earlier
problems. However I end up defending not the surgery so much as the
orthopedic profession. I still believe that the best solutions to the
problem caused by scoliosis lay with these professionals. Perhaps one day
they will figure out the way to correct flat back syndrome. There are
several in fact that are trying out these corrective surgeries even now in
both Germany and the United States. So there is hope in the future I guess.

The medication, biofeedback, TENS, and a hundred other little things taught
to me helped to make it through each day. Each little piece fit neatly into
place in this struggle for pain management routine that worked. It used to
be that this group also provided one of these pieces. It gave me some relief
from the pain of daily living and offered a forum for pain management
discussions.

This mail list was/is supposed to be about support. Since last spring it has
turned into a forum for alternative therapy. To me this group has descended
into an advertisings medium for Copes. That is my solely my opinion of
course.

So I went a bit overboard with a few of my comments. Actually I was well
meaning. The decisions made by parents over which course of action to pursue
does affect the child in later life. The child in effect has to live with
their decision. I hope that parents would consider all options very
carefully before choosing something that inevitably will affect the whole
course of their later life. I would hope that parents would seek
professional orthopedic help before they considered alternative care.
However that is not for me to decide.

So this will be my last message to the list. I too have been thinking of
unsubscribing for some time because of the direction that the list was
going. Many others have issued the same sentiments. I guess I can't stand to
watch the discussions without feeling somewhat emotional. So to all those
that I offended I apologise.

Great news for Kay!!! What was her curve and what kind of surgery did she
have?
Dr. Cowan took me off the brace on Friday, busy week at work so far so I
have been sore trying to work out my back muscles to get them back in
shape. Dr. Cowan expects me to start with my back extensions at 20 lbs and
work my way up to 120 and 90 was the lbs I did before surguery. I am still
doing well. Still on Ultram but down to once or twice a day.

Did you hear from Bonnie yet?

No one has ever made that claim. No one here has even said outright that
Copes is the Best choice, just the best choice for them.

I equally
>have the right to tell you that this is quackery.

You are correct. You have the right to say what you want. However, to
accuse a method of being quackery is just a cop out. The AMA was found
guilty of slander in the 80's for their ideas against chiropractic BECAUSE
IT HAD NO BASIS IN TRUTH. The quakery cop out is just a way of saying that
you know nothing about the topic.

 You don't seem to like
>medical technology much prefering to support Copes. Well my question is how
>much are you making off of this stand? What's in it for you? You really

>to be well versed in defending this foolishness.

You obviously don't know peggy too well do you? No one here has a vested
interest in the Copes Foundation. No one here works for copes, no one here
is a Copes doctor. Just because someone believes in something, that does
not mean that they are profitting from it. She and her daughter have been
through more medical technology then you will see in your lifetime.

No one is abusing children, my friend. We all care for children and that is
why we make the choices we do. How do you define "Proper Medical Care"? Is
it - seeing a surgeon when you have a sniffle? Is it - Everyone with
scoliosis should go through surgery? Or is it - Everyone should at least see
a physician? Because if it is the latter, I agree. And those going through
Copes HAVE seen a lisenced physician...I am a lisenced physician. And I for
one, think you couldn't be further off the base if you tried.

"Defend the established medical practice"? All the techniques that you so
proudly flaunt started outside of the "established medical practice". Just
because you do not agree that something is so, does not make it false.
Thank God Copernicus didn't think like you or we may all still be sitting on

This list is a tremendous resource. It's value is directly proportional
to the percentage of content that offers information/insight that is
useful to the other members.

When someone injects a post that offers ZERO value other members, it is
tempting to post a response that expressed our collective annoyance at the
author.

PLEASE DO NOT INDULGE THIS TEMPTATION.. it only compels the original
author to prove how clever he/she is with an even more clever response. As
a recent poster explained quite honestly, an eloquent post will not change
him.

All of us who find this list extremely valuable share your feelings.
It goes without saying.

With all due respect, Dr. Dean, alot of us have "been there, done that"
and alternatives didn't work for us or we researched and didn't feel
certain alternatives were fit for us. I am all for learning absolutely
everything out there that is available with total open-mindedness, but
my POINT is geared at the suggestion that the surgery intended
individual could be taking it "lightly". That is what your posting said.

I honestly don't mean to be difficult with you (seems we have had our
disagreements), but I guess I get my feathers ruffled a bit when someome
may suggest that just because of our decision to have surgery, (which by
the way, is by far the most difficult decision I hope I will ever have
to make in my lifetime), we haven't researched everything else
completely. That is where the lines are always drawn on this site and
disagreements tend to erupt. I would love to hear more success stories
on the other alternatives, to educate myself as well as my children
since this medical problem looks like it stays with families for
generations to come.

Carol

Subject: Re: Back brace

My first couple of days at school were okay. Some people said some
things but others justn asked questions like what happened to you and
stuff like that. There is a girl at my school who also wears a brace but
hers is different and doesn't have the neck thing. Hers goes right under
her arms and dow to her butt but in the back it goes up to her shoulders.
She had it at the beginning of the year and at first you couldn't really
tell only that she looked a little heavier than before. She sits in
front of me and sometimes when she is sitting you can see the top of the
brace in the back poke out. Also when she can't bend down so she would
have to croutch down if she dropped something. Now sometimes she even
wears clothes that show the top of the brace in the back or shirts that
when she moves show her belly which is really her brace. At first I was
real curious about it and one time I accidently hit her on the back with
a pencil. It made a loud noise and everyone in the class looked. That
was before I found out that I had to wear one too. I didn't find out I
even had scoliosis until the monday before christmas and then they saqid
you have to get a brace in 2 weeks and I did. The girl and I are now
getting to be good friends. Sometimes people say that we are the brace
twins which doesn't bother me but others say oh look out here come those
two ugly girls in the gross armor. I don't know why but the neck ring
makes me walk a little different and I have to scoot the chair back
really far to do work or eat and sometimes people will walk weird or
scoot their cahirs back just to make fun of me. I try really hard not to
pay attention to them. Did you ever get made fun of? Well I guess
that's all I have.

Carol,

I understand your point and perhaps the term lightly is not what I was
looking for. What I mean is that often times (and I see it more in surgery
for herniated discs than anything) people embrace the current medical model
and, though they KNOW the risks, they tend to either overlook the
alternatives, are TOLD to overlook the alternatives (like people saying
chiropractic won't work etc.), or just plain don't know about the
alternatives.

I am sorry if it sounded like I was saying that if you're choosing surgery
they you just don't know, because I know you know; and I know MOST people
know; but, I also know that not EVERYONE knows. In fact I had a mother who
is on this list who is a lurker who wrote me privately thanking me because
she had no idea about chiropractic and she and her son were both feeling
better after a few weeks worth of treatment. It is THESE people I am trying
to get the point across to. I am not saying Surgery is horrible and
chiropractic cures all...I am saying that they often times work together and
make things go smoother; and if there is a chance to avoid surgery, I would
be willing to try it FIRST even if it means higher risks if it
fails...Because if it succeeds, then there is hardly any risk at all.

Do you follow me cause this is a little rambly for me...Hope this clears it
up.

Dr. Dean

to it & every time somone did it I would answer them & laugh. Hope everything

Subject: New Braces

Carrie,

Forget those people who tease you. They're jerks. I don't know anyone
who has a brace! None of my friends do, and no one in my school does, I
don't think (unless they wear it after school because I've never seen
anyone wear it in school).

I have a Boston Brace which sounds like the one that the girl in your
class has. It's pretty unnoticeable but hurts a lot, especially in the
beginning. And the "pads" they put in don't help a bit!

Anyway, keep me updated on your condition! If you have any questions,
e-mail me at: rachelaf@hotmail.com

Paul,

It is undertandable that you feel strongly on issues concerning
scoliosis, we all do.

It is very big of you to apologize, and I should apologize for my unkind
tone in my last response. As far as feeling bitter, I am sure it is not
a rare sentiment for people who have gone through as much as you have.

I think it would be a mistake for you to leave the list. If the
alternative methods are something that you abbsolutely don't want to
hear about, you could look for support on the "medical" list.

I would prefer you stayed here though because I believe you have a lot
to offer. Unless I read wrong you have been to cronic pain clinics and
are utilizing a kind of bio-feed back to help relax and alleviate the
pain.

There are many on this list suffering from cronic pain as you are and
would benefit from any tips or experiences you can share here.

Likewise there are many who have tips and experience to offer you.

I hope you reconsider leaving the list. We are not out to advertise
Copes, in fact many of the users ocassionally air their gripes too. We
are not trying to talk anyone out of surgery either. People who go that
route have given it long careful consideration and decided on surgery
from the options they have explored.

As I said scoliosis is really just one symptom that presents due to many
varied causes, from what I can tell no two cases are exactly the same,
that is why treatment, either surgery or bracing or any other
alternative are not necessarily going to work the same way for every
individual.

Your treatment must be tailored to your case. But your experience
provides valuable information for others to hear, research further and
hopefully benefit from.

Just so you know Natalie has seen Orthopedic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons,
Chiropractors, and Phsyical Therapists.

The Neurosurgeon performed surgery on her brain and spine, the
Orthopedic surgeon wouldn't want to operate until she was older even if
I opted for that and the bracing program he recommended took into
account neither exercise nor nutritional aspects and the brace was not a
good fit for her. He also stated that he fully expected her curve to
worsen in the brace he recommended. When we embarked on the program she
is in we did it as skeptics thinking that if it did not provide valuable
results we would drop out in 6 months. As you know we didn't drop out
because she got wonderful benefits.

The last paragraph was just to alleviate your concern that we blindly
chose an alternative approach without careful consideration of her
options. This has been our obsession finding just the right approach
for her individual case. Just as it has been yours to find the right
combination of things that work for you.

No sympathy or pity thrown your way, it is obvious you are pretty strong
and will do just fine.

But I would trade stories with others on the list in your same
circumstance if I were you, it helps on all sides.

Peggy

Hi Laurie & Becky -

I have been on holiday for the last two weeks, and I can't remember when
Becky is having her surgery. Has she already had it? If she has, I hope
everything went well, and that she is doing great - if she hasn't had it -
good luck, I'm thinking of you, and Becky, I bet you're scared now, but
don't worry about it - it will be a lot better than you actually think it
will be. I was soooooo scared going up to my operation date - but when it
was over I realised I had been worrying about nothing - so keep your
spirits up - would love to hear from you -

Hi all....

Just got back from my last visit with Kay. She gets to leave the
hospital tomorrow. She'll stay overnight locally, and then is taking
the train (Yikes! she won't fly) to southern California on Saturday.
She'll be going to her own home, where a friend will be living with her
for at least the next several months. She's doing really great, and
looks like a different person. She sat up on the edge of the bed for
several hours. Something I couldn't do for months after surgery. She's
got a great mental attitude and seems to be ecstatic to be getting out.
She wanted me to tell everyone hi and that she isn't crazy any more.
<hehe>

Regards,

Linda

Paul, you are not the lone ranger. That was my exact opinion when I
first started on this list in October. I kept it in the back of my
mind, but still read on because there ARE very kind and sincere people
on this list, too. People have helped me and I hope I have helped some
people, too. It is nice to be able to talk to people who have similar
problems with me. It is a wonderful thing, but every day when I check
my messages, all I see is "Copes this and Copes that". I just don't
read them most of the time.

Teresa.

My chiro regrered me to a neurologist when I came in because the right side
of my face and arm was numb and tingly. But then the neuro got really
defensive and said it was either him or the chiro treating me, not both. He
doped me on the standard meds,..... steroids, pain killers, and muscle
relaxants,...needless to say they didn't work and I've never been back to him.

Hi Paul, read your post agreeing with alot you had to say, understanding
your frustration. After bracing 18 years ago, I too think they were
"experimenting", not really knowing what the outcome 20 years down the road
would be. I've been told I have to learn to live with the pain.
WHY!????!!!??? I ask! Why should I live with headaches, stiff burning neck
and a back that "pops" out when it wants to?

Subject: i'm new!

hi all:
i just want to introduce myself - my name is shayna, and i had harrington rods
implanted in 1980 after a couple years of unsuccessful bracing. i'm now 30,
and although the surgery was successful, i do have quite a bit of discomfort,
stiffness, and soreness. i'm sure much of this can be attributed to an auto
accident i was in in '91, because before that, i really don't recall having
much discomfort at all.
if anyone has any suggestions or advice as to what i can do to get some
relief, i would greatly appreciate it (i'm trying to steer clear of
prescription medication.)
also, does anyone have any information about copes bracing for post-surgical
patients, to resolve the residual curvature, and hopefully help with some of
this pain? best wishes for a great new year filled with love and happiness to
all of you!
shayna
