Subject: scoliosis and diving

Hello,

I am sending this request out for information as I'm not too sure my
email made it to the list yesterday. Sorry if it did and I'm
repeating myself!

I'm looking for any information on whether it is possible to go
diving with scoliosis. I had my surgery in Nov 96 and have been
playing with the idea of diving ever since but I don't know much
about it with regards to scoliosis and how to go about things.

If anyone on the list has any information or has been diving I would
be really grateful.

Natasha

Nancy,

My daughter has a 29 deg. lumbar curve and it was discovered when she was
12. They monitored her for a year and it didn't progress past 29 deg.
They felt she still had a lot of growing to do, (and since you grow while
you are sleeping), that she should use the CBB and hope it would stop the
progression of the curve.

Subject: Re: physical therapy and scoliosis

Dear Pip,

I have had tremendous problems finding a physical therapist who is
prepared (or has absolutely any experience) in treating people with
spinal fusions for scoliosis. This may be because I live in the
boondocks of northwestern NJ, but it's more likely that they do not see
too many people like us. I went out and interviewed the P-Ts at all
centers within 15 miles of my home & got all kinds of reactions to how
they would treat me if I were to become their patients, from extreme
forms of exercise to training with certain exercise to be done at home.
(Meanwhile my spinal surgeon was saying that I will need lifelong gentle
P-T in order to maintain any kind of life with walking, etc.)

When I finally found one who was responsive & willing to apply her
knowledge to a new situation, it took her some 3-4 months of 3 times
weekly visits to get a good handle on how my muscles were working with
the fusion's intervention. (Virtually none of them respond normally to
standard exercises, & some are "unreachable" due to their immobility.)
Unfortunately she got sick herself & I have been floundering. I tried
another very highly recommended therapist who teaches P-T at U
Medicine/Dentistry of NJ, who kept insisting my situation wasn't that
bad until she overstretched my legs so much that the nerves at L-4
flared to an unbearable level of pain. She didn't even realize what she
was doing & kept doing it, no less! I ended up spending 4 weeks in bed,
having suicidal thoughts, & having to get a nerve block just to start
bringing me back out of the woods.

I guess the message here is: BE CAREFUL!! P-Ts are unfamiliar with
spinal fusions & what they do with your muscles, so you have to be the
monitor & play it very carefully.

Is it possible for the 1 and 2 line private notes from 1 person to
another, specifically meant for them, to be sent to them only and not
the entire list and/or digest? My mailbox is cluttered up with
"hi-how ya doings?" and "oops--sorry, my puppy came in", etc. Instead
of hitting reply--which sends it to the entire list--just cut and
paste the person's address and send it to them. Keep the list for
information that applies to everyone. If, by some chance, the list is
designed to automatically duplicate, then it ought to be changed.

Just my 2 cents worth!!!

>"Curiosity doesn't matter any more. These days people don't want to be

Dean, that's completely bunk. Curiosity rules these days. The huge
exponential growth of the web as people race to surf the wealth of
information. The enormous outlays for scientific research in
genetics. The tremendous flow of investment in technical development.
Artistic expression and independent film.

The criticism of alternative medicine is about exposing the techniques
that people use to exploit ignorance and confuse others and create
social mischief. Recovered memory. Facilitated learning. Touch
healing.

Alternative medicine is big business, and to cry foul and criticize the
other party of ignorance is transparent disingenuity.

Sometimes it takes a curious child to see through the web. See today's
New York Times.

http://www.nytimes.com

The article starts:

"Two years ago, Emily Rosa of Loveland, Colo., designed and carried out
an experiment that challenges a leading treatment in
alternative medicine. Her study, reported Wednesday in the
Journal of the American Medical Association, has thrown the field into
tumult.

Emily is 11. She did the experiment for her fourth grade science fair. "

Hi hcm!

If you look up the IYNAUS website, it talks about how Iyengar teachers
become certified. I begin teacher training in August. You have to study
under a certified teacher. To become a beginning instructor, you must
learn 48 asanas or poses, inside and out. Be able to teach them and
know all of the movements of these poses. They judge you on how you
teach a yoga class and you have to take a written test about all of the
poses. For each level of certification, there are additional asanas you
must learn. If someone is a certified Iyengar teacher, you know they
have experience teaching and knowledge of what they are doing, the
proper alignment in each pose.
Not all yoga teachers have extensive training. If yoga is not taught
correctly, people can get injured by un proper alignment. Like you could
mess your knee up if you keep doing a movement that is not correct.

I'm glad you are interested.

Hi there!

I have been lurking for a couple of months now have a few questions. I
must say that I find most of the info really informative. My daughter
who is almost 17 was diagnosed with scoliosis 3 years ago with a 38
degree thoracic curve. Up to this point it has not progressed but she
is experiencing occasional pain in her back and legs. She has only been
followed, because she was fully grown at the time of diagnosis. She
also has enjoyed reading this digest. Last month, my 13 year old son
was diagnosed with a 14 degree thoracic curve. He will be seen again in
4 months to see if there is any progression. He was born with VCFS
(velo-cardio-facial syndrome) which one of the characteristics is
congenital heart disease (he has Tetralogy of Fallot) and has had
open-heart surgery for this 10 years ago. The doctor we saw says his
scoliosis is more than likely hereditary, but it is not uncommon to see
scoliosis in children who have had heart surgery. Of the many
characteristics of VCFS one that is not common from the research I have
done is scoliosis. Anyone out there whos' had open-heart surgery or
VCFS or know anything similar?

Colette

Rich,

I agree that "touch therapy" is crap...there has never been a study that
showed otherwise...What I am referring to here is the "I don't agree with
you about chiropractic so I won't let you talk on our list" that a certain
person has on the med list. I find it interesting that the list was made
for "scientific" purposes and that when I send 5 scientific journal articles
over there they never get on simply because they were sent by a
chiropractor. You are right, alternative medicine is big business. And I
thing the quote does apply to everyone...on both sides of the argument.
People tend to disagree with things that are different from what they do.
For example, I am a Pepsi guy, I can't understand why anyone would like
coke. It really is that simple...people do not like to be wrong or to
defend what they did/ are doing to others when they are not prepared to do
so. If this was a soda list, certain people would want to make a soda-coke
list so that I couldn't talk about Pepsi, or heaven forbid, Jolt (the
alternative cola)!

Ok I am way out there now I better stop.

Hi.
Yes, I had open heart surgery, when I was 2 days old..
Now I am 20 years old, and I have scoliosis to.
Inn Norway (my home country) the doc’s have seen that loot of people that
had open-heart surgery when they was kid, developed some kind of
scoliosis/kyfosis. And that they had to use a brace some time in life.
In my case, the doc think that my scoliosis is from when they "cut my ribs"
to get to the heart.

Dr. Dean and Rich,

I believe in the healing qualities of touch. I just read today an article about
a little girl who did a science project proving touch therapy is not real. I
think it doesn't work if you don't believe it will work. I am a massage
therapist and one of the reasons a massage feels so good is the
nurturing you recieve from the therapist. There have been studies done
about babies that are never touched compared to babies that recieve the
nurturing they need. The babies that are held are happier, healthier and
don't cry as much. I can't quote any statistics or quote any specific
articles, this just seems like common sense to me.
This may seem like new age thinking, I find it to be true.
We are energy with energy fields surrounding us. I am certified in Reiki
healing, which is healing by the laying on of hands. This is not scientific.
It is human nature.

It is wonderful to have an open mind.

Kate,

This "touch therapy" is not the use of touch for therapy, rather it is the
use of energy fields for the treatment of problems...Being a chiro, I feel
very strongly in the therapeutic effects of touch...just not touch therapy.

Maybe someone else has saved it (hint, hint! %-)
Why did the nurse want to know if you were on the pill? Does anyone know
if there are surgical or scolisis complications from any of the
hormone-based (pill or Depo-Provera) birth control methods?
For various and asundry reasons (including extreme mood swings and awful
cramps because of an estrogen/progsterone imbalance, I believe), it's
been suggested I should start taking something Progesterone-based. But I
can't find any info (and the ob/gyn sure doesn't know) on how that
related to suregery recovery, esp. bone fusion and the like. What
about curve progression and birth control? Pregnant women make lg. amt's
of progesterone, and there curves often progress. Or is that because of
the weight on the spine?
I know I'm asking a lot of questions (as always)to which there may not
be definitive answers. But any info or discussion is most welcomed!

I didn't say that surgery is the only cure (Because there is no real
cure, only treatment) i said that surgery improves it the most. I have
done a lot of research. So much, that it is overflowing a 2 1/2 inch
binder. it is all from doctor's personal web pages, and hospiytal
records, and real tests and real pictures of the effects of bracing
and surgery. And, that was only my opinion. That is what i think, that
is what most doctors think, but really there is no simple answer.

Many birth control pills contain estrogen. Estrogen is linked to osteoblastic
bone growth and slowing down osteoclastic bone resorption. FYI...The new drug
Reloxifin by Lily mimics estrogen and acts on the nuclear estrogen receptor to
stimulate bone formation without the potentially harmful effects of estrogen.
I don't remember the original post so I hope this helps.

minutes from Notre dame if that helps you put me on the map..... I wore a
brace for 13 months when i was 13 and 14. I was supposed to have surgery and
it has been cancelled twice..... someday... it's elective at this point and I
elect to wait... I ahve two curves a 48 and a 52 or somewhere around abouts
there.....

samarah,

I agree that there is no "cure" as such, but, I believe that surgery is not
always necessary.. The research you have done I am impressed... However, you
said that surgery improves it the most.... could that be because the cases
that require surgery..... REQUIRE surgery?? Not all cases are in need of
surgical procedures!!

Subject: Intoduction from Singapore

Hi all,

My name is Tan Boon Kiat and I am from Singapore. U can call me Boon
Kiat and Tan is my Chinese surname. I just happen to know the
existence of this list when I am surfing in the internet, looking for
interesting mailing lists yesterday. I was diagnosed to have a 57 deg.
lumbar curve when I am 14 years old during a mass health screening
for all secondary 2 students of Singapore. After countless visits to
see the renowned doctor at that time, Prof Daruwalla, my parents have
decided to opt for fusion surgery for my serious condition. Though I
did not feel any distress at that time, I too feel that surgery is a
long term solution for me to stop my condition from worsening any
further. I am glad that my parents and myself have made the right
decision. With the assurance of a few nurses and the professor
himself, I was admitted into Singapore General hospital on the 19th
Dec 1985, to be operated on the next morning. I have to undergo an 8
hour anaesthesia procedure and by the time I gain consciousness, it's
already 8 pm. It's very painful for the next 2 days but subsided as
days went by.

The doctor has attached a rod to my spine together with 24 screws. I
am told that they will be part of me and are for life. Though the
doctor has reduced the curve to only 32 degrees, I behave just like a
normal being except that I am advised against rugby and
weight-lifting. Swimming tops the list of sports followed by squash
and badminton. Occassionally, I may feel easily backache or that my
back is easily strained if I stand or sqat too long. But slowly I try
to do pull ups or push ups to strenghthen my spine. It works! U can
see that ur condition starts to deteriorate if I stop jogging for a
week. Ever since the ops, I have not lay down on my bed reading books
or sit on the chair with one leg up. I try to stick to a jogging
schedule or do pushups if the haze is too strong outside. That can
help to straighten my back and I could feel the presence of my muscle
at the left lumbar vertebrae ( my spine is curved to the right).

Well, that's it and it's been a good 13 years. What worry me most is
that I reached middle aged and wonder will the rod cause any hindrance
to my movements. Well, I think that the best thing is to invest a few
hours per week in sports and I am sure that will free me from a lot of
discomforts in the days to come.

regards,
Boon Kiat

I checked out the pics of braces on linda's homepage. I think that the Boston
is pretty much what those look like, but my milwaukee did not look like
that.....it kinda had the bottom shape of a Boston and then a metal barin
front, two in back, and a neck ring. I have also seen that style of Milwaukee
and was hoping that is what I would have gotten..... Oh well... Live and
learn........ But, I urge you to check out the pages if you haven't yet!!!!

Peggy-

I know that surgery isn't always nessecary, but when it is, it has a
more percentage decrease in curve than the brace does, USUALLY, unless
the curve is right where the brace can fix it, or the surgery has
complications afterwords. That is what i was getting at, though surgry
can be more painful after, the brace is painful as well, but mine has
been hurting, very painfully, for 3 months. I heard that the pain from
surgery only lasts 2 weeks-tops. Again, usually. With scoliosis, it is
so different from person to person, you can't really be sure.

Hard to find a surgery that hasn't had some post problems-either right
after wards or 10-20 years later.

Re-read all these posts from people who have had surgery, their pain now
and on-going and the extra fusions, etc., etc., then say it's all over
after 2 weeks. It's a lifetime!

Subject: Pain

Okay, I had surgery eight years ago. It was a posterior spinal fusion.
The pain from the operation lasted about two weeks. I started having pain
again, not from the operation itself, but the results of it. This doesn't
apply to everyone though. Just be sure to ask your doctors is you will
suffer from any pain from the results of the operation. I was twelve at
the time and didn't have any clue as to what was going on. Generally, the
doctors won't force you into anything that they feel would put you in any
pain in the long run. Sometimes they don't know. It's not like they're
gods and know everything. Just be sure you ask to know what you SHOULD
expect. Because I was young, naieve, and scared, I didn't ask any
questions. I had no idea that pain could ensue and now I have to go in for
another operation in July. If you ask questions and know what to expect,
then you won't have to deal with scoliosis like I have, nearly my whole
life. I was diagnosed when I was six....now I'm going on 20. It doesn't
have to be this way for any of you.
