Thank you for relating Natalie's experience! This sounds very similar
to me (except I'm 22, and have had this happen off and on for years!). I
remember something mentioned about "fundus" before -- whether by my
*wonderful* pediatriacian years ago or someone else, I don't know.
But I do have a chiro I go to for joint problems (my hips, my
shoulders, etc, are always getting injured, and he helps that very well)
and I think I'll ask him about this . Thank you for sharing!

Subject: Re: Pseudoarthrosis

Elizabeth,
I went for 8 years with a fusion that never healed (unknown until last
surgery). It was only from T12-L2, which is a very short fusion. But my
surgeon felt that this was one of the reasons for my severe pain. With
that nonunion, besides the pain, I developed arthritis, DDD, and ruptured
discs as well as a broken rod and kyphosis. I really can't say if those
would have happened anyway with a successful union, or maybe at least slow
down the progression, or even if the nonunion CAUSED any of it. I guess
there's no way to know. Anyway, I know you're having a really rough time
right now, if there's anything I can do, just let me know. Take care.

Elizabeth - You are one of the best contributors to the list and I admire
and respect you. As a "cyber-friend" I must step in here and say I cannot
believe you typed these words! You are so informed and have the gumption
to go beyond the call to get recognotion from external sources for the
condition we suffer. You are a strong, intelligent woman and, yes, we are
entitled to our fears, but I'm officially kicking you in the pants =;->.
Call him back on Monday please! Regards - CBK

Subject: Kathy Stott, day 3

Hello Everyone,
I just rec'd an update from Kathy's husband. He said that each day does
bring a little bit of improvement. Yesterday they had her sit up on the
edge of the bed, which she did very well.
Today they will have her do the same thing, and again tomorrow. On Monday
they say they want to have her taking a few steps.

She is still obviously in much pain from the surgery, but her husband thinks
she has much improved.

Kathy temporarily unsubscribed from the scoliosis lists just prior to her
surgery. If anyone wants to send well wishes to Kathy, I receive the digest
form of the lists. I will keep all of the mail to Kathy in a separate
folder and deliver them to her when she returns home and is able to compute.
It would be a really neat present to Kathy from all of us. Or, you may send
her good wishes to me personally at marthaw@gointer.net.
Please continue to keep Kathy in your thoughts and prayers. I will keep you
posted. So far, it sounds like she is doing very well. Sincerely, Cathy
with a "C" :-)

Subject: Query to adults who have had problems years after Harrington rod

We are new subscribers. My wife is 40 and has had a Harrington rod since
age 12, to the L4 level. She now has severe sciatic problems due to
slippage and spinal stenosis, and the proposed surgery is fusion and
reintsrumentation. We'd like to hear from anyone who has had this sort of
massive revision and reconturing - how is the surgery, post-op pain, how
long is recovery, what happens when you lose mobility from L5-S1 (can you
clean yourself after going to the bathroom?), and who in the New York City
area are the best surgeons for this? You can respond through the board, or
directly to our home at kahnfamily1@msn.email.com, or to the husband (I'm a
doctor) at kahndav@cpmc3.cpmc.columbia.edu. Many thanks for any advice and
your experiences.

Yea, Megan! Your follow-up visit is such wonderful news!
When you say that your physiatrist is going to "knock down structures
one by one" to figure out the source of your pain, what does that mean?
I don't take it literally, but I've never heard that phrase before. And
was your physiatrist assigned to you, or did you choose him?
Thanks!

Subject: Copes braces

For those of you considering the Copes brace, I applaud your decision as
that direction is the best direction for true correction of
scoliosis;however, there is an improved version of that type of brace on
the market, it is about 1/2 the cost of his, price includes casting, and
is fabricated by orthotists, not unsupervised lab techs. It is covered
by more insurance companies and your treating physician can still
maintain treatment control rather than be subserviant to Copes. E-mail
me if you're interested.

Andy, I have a question too. I am 45 and have a backward S curve of
approx 40º both ways. My daughter has a 52º thoracolumbar curve. Since
being on this list, I have learned that there are curves that progress into
adulthood. Just met a former neighbor the other day that was told she was
skeletally mature and not to worry about a 20º curve. She is 23 and it has
already progressed to 45º. Why are doctors under the impression that
curves do not progress? This obviously makes people ignore their health
since most think they know what they're talking about.
