I'm looking for information about surgical proceedures used for
correcting kyphosis.
Intensive surgery is being suggested to correct a rather complicated
situation in my back - which probably originally resulted from a nasty
1982 fracture of L3/4, total disintegration of all lumbar disks, and
instrumentation. I can't find very much about the types of surgeries
available --- the options seem VERY limited to anterior/posterior. I've
tried to find out if there are other courses of treatment, but haven't
located anything. I'd appreciate any help with this search. Thanks.
I'd also like to "talk" with anyone who has had this surgery.

My curvature with the brace was about 41 degrees and without the brace my
curvature was about 51 degrees. When the time got closer to having the
surgery I started feeling a lot more pain so I knew that having the surgery
was the right thing to do. I was in the hospital for about 5 days. I
actually left a day early because I did not want to stay anymore and my mom
said that she could keep an eye on me. If you have any more questions please
feel free to ask. Talk to you soon.

Ashley,
Well, first of all they put me to sleep by using anestisia. Then they
performed the surgery and the next thing I remeber I woke up in intensive
care. After the surgery my curvature is now about 10-15 degrees. They can
not fix it totally because problems could occur so they correct the curvature
as much as possible. Well, I gotta go. Talk to you soon.

Subject: FLAT BACK, FATIGUE, or POSTURE

Since April 27 surgery, my husband reminds me daily to stand up straight,
hold my head erect, and relax the shoulders. As the day progresses and
fatigue increases, I have a tendancy to lean forward, move my head
forward, and tense the shoulders, partly to avoid [muscle?] pain in the
back and sacrum. Is this part of the recovery process that will
eventually go away as muscle strength returns? I have some concerns
regarding flat back. Does it occur immediately after surgery or does the
condition develop over time? At the 3-month post-op visit, the surgeon
reassured me I do not have flat back. Nevertheless, the concern exisits
because I look/walk like an aging robot! In an effort to improve
posture, the physical therapist says to envision a string attached to the
chest that is pulling me forward and to push on an imaginary pencil
between the shoulder blades. It's a lot to think about just to walk
erect!

Hi,
Auna my Name is Christine. I know how you must feel because I've had
three operations one when I was two and two when I was five. Really the
operations wern't that bad the thing I think is the worst thing is when they
have to take a little sample of blood after that it's smooth sailing allthe
way. they bring you into this room and give you some yucky medicine then they
put you on this table and put sand paper junk in your hair then they put you
on this bed then weel you into the operating room and wate till your asleep
then when you wake up it's all over you rest a few days then go home. Ihope
that made you a little less afraid

Hello Everyone,
Kathy had her corrective surgery earlier this month. She seems to be doing
remarkably well, all things considered. I had the pleasure of speaking with
her last night. She said the hardest part to deal with has been the deflated
lung. The lung is slowly becoming more functional. She has had much more
pain with the anterior incision than the posterior. I think that is very
encouraging, as we know that the anterior incision pain will go away with time.
I am keeping a computer folder to send to Kathy when she starts computing
again, which will contain well wishes from the scoliosis group. I am sorry
to say that presently I only have 2 messages to send her. (hint hint) It
would be nice to send her a folder with lots of messages! Have a great day.

Thank you for making the scoliosis archives available on-line.
There are free indexing programs, but the common ones use CGI scripts and are resource hogs. But you could take a look at, for example, Matt Wright's on-line collection, which includes an indexing script. And there are others out there that are similar. I think it would be much easier for the end-user if you just string together all the archives as a large text file, which an interested party could download and search, using their own software. Or, even better, separate the archives into a couple of topics, and let end-users download those of interest. Just a thought.
Eve

Hello everybody,
I just joined this list and followed your discussions closely. I have a 3
curved scoliosis with a main thoracal curve (something about 60 Degree). It
is not a big problem so far and even some orthopedics didn't recognize me as
scoliotic in the first place. I started physiotherapie with 5 years of age
together with one of those plaster shells you're sleeping in (sorry, I am
not a native english speaker, so I don't know the term for that). Later I
got one of those nice Milwaukee braces. But the most important thing was the
physiotherapy, because it was based mostly on the breath and the power to
"reposture" your body. In controlling and direct my breath I learend how to
control my back muscels and derotate my back to a farely large degree. I
wonder why nobody around here ever mentioned any kind of physiotherapy.
My biggest concern, however, is that my 5 year old daughter has a scoliosis
now too. I am worried, that she might not be as lucky as I was. Is there
anybody with a similar constellation? Would it be worse for her just because
my scoliosis is considerably strong?
Looking forward to hear from you about passing your scoliosis to your child
and your experience how to cope with it.

Claudia

I do not believe there is a bias toward alternative treatments on this list.
I know that alternative treatments are banned for discussion on the other list
and therefore more discussion of alternative treatments happens here on the
"uncensored" list. This is a great forum for all types of information and
needs to stay that way. If you attack an entire profession that is widely
accepted, covered by most insurance companies and used by a high percentage of
people on the list, people are probably going to answer in defense of that
profession.

You should expect this and not be so taken aback.

Cathy-

I too had the same concerns. I had surgery 11 months ago and for
many months I thought I would walk stiff forever. It does get better
over time. My therapist did tell me that because our spine is
stationary we don't have the same fluid movements when we walk. But you
will soon naturally start moving your arms and that helps to feel
normal! As with all things concerning this major surgery, it takes lots
of time.

As far as any surgery or Back/neck injury..
If things are tense or in Spasm..Ie (muscles)...we will tend to hold ourselfs
stiff...or to move..or even breath a certin way to avoid any pain....
Once things heal and get back to where they belong...and these Back Muscles
have been thru alot..... and Do take a while to heal and relax....You will be
able to avoid the forward..and rounding of the Shoulders... But do as Theripst
and hubby says..so you do not get into the habit of walking and holding
yourself this way....Every once in a while ..un round them shoulders and try
and walk with your head up and stright....

MOST teens do not have to wear post-surgical braces. It depends on what
you have done, and what your doctor prefers.

Subject: Re: cause of scoliosis in question - help!

Syringo Myelia (a fluid filled cyst in the spinal cord), can also cause
scoliosis and is not an unusual result of serious trauma to the spine.

I would imagine that MRIs were done at the time of the accident, but you may
want to ask if follow up MRI should be done. The syrinx could start out quite
small and then continue to grow and cause the soliosis.

My daughters scoliosis which was diagnosed at age 5 was due to a syrinx. The
syrinx in her case was not due to trauma but due to a problem at the base of
her brain.

I do talk to others on the support page for syringo myelia whose syrinx was
due to trauma.

Something you may want to check into, as attempted straightening of a spine
that has cord complications, without first addressing those complications can
have devestating results.

Subject: Re: Antibiotics and scoliosis

Heres a twist to the antibiotic theory. Suppose the scoliosis, or underlying
condition that causes the scoliosis also caused the young bodies to become ill
more often therefore causing more ear infections colds etc. (Instead of the
antibiotics causing scoli, maybe the actual cause of scoli caused other types
of weaknesses to immunity as well?) Even though the scoli had not yet
presented the underlying cause could have been causing the problems requiring
antibiotics?

The reason that I thought this might be something to think about is that my
daughter also took lots of antibiotics, had frequent strep, ear infections
etc. But the cause of her scoliosis is almost definitely the syrinx in her
spinal cord which was caused by the chiari malformation at the base of her
brain.

It is suspected that the location of the syrinx in her cord could have also
caused her to have problems with digestion and metabolizing certain nutrients
correctly. After having her deficiencies checked and remedied through change
in diet, supplements and exercises to work the affected muscles etc all of her
illnesses, constant congestion, frequent strep, allergies etc. went away.

Just a thought.

I know I beat this topic to death, but it is so important.

If there are no malformed bones and a child is diagnosed as young as 4 an MRI
should definitely be ordered. I don't know if your doctor has done so, but
you should really insist if they haven't.

Treatment of problems that would show up on an MRI are so much easier to treat
when a child is very young, and you want to have any potential situation taken
care of as soon as possible to prevent any further progression of the
scoliosis if possible.

Subject: Re: FLAT BACK, FATIGUE, or POSTURE

My surgery was June 1. I had no problem walking normally indoors. I
found myself more "stiff" when I was out. But I don't lean forward. I
am also much more relaxed when I sit and sleep as well. Within the last
week, more of the back muscles have loosen up and a lot of numbness (not
all) has disapppeared. I find that I am walking normally now. I still
have an area on my back--horizontal, right under the shoulder blades,
that is still quite stiff and the muscles pull in that area. I try not
to concentrate on that. However, when I came home from the hospital I
found myself doing the following--I would hunch my shoulders up so I
wouldn't feel the stiffness of the muscles in the shoulder blade area.
I caught a glance of myself in the mirror--UGH!!! So I became very
aware of when I did that and now that's not a problem--I sort of trained
myself, which took some time. Now if I could only get rid of that
muscle burning in the right shoulder area I'd feel much better!!

OK, Rich, I checked, and "the big silver book" is not by Cassileth. His
name sounds familiar, however, so it's probably a standard title for one
of the bookstores I worked in. First name is possibly Andrew or Michael
(at least, they sound familiar to me) Sorry this is so vague!

I got the impression from former posts that flat back syndrome was something
happened years post surgery. Also, I was given the impression that the
occurrence of flat back syndrome was FAR less likely to happen with the
current and improved instrumentation.
I am 7 months post surgery. You still have a lot of healing to do. As a
comparison, my 3rd month was the pits! I was very tired a lot and I was
stiff. It was easy to do something to trigger pain because I was more mobile
but still healing. Right now I'm having trouble keeping the pain that I still
occurs in perspective even though I know It's not as bad as it was say a few
months ago. Hang in there and trust your doctor.

Subject: Re: FLAT BACK, FATIGUE, or POSTURE

Cathy,
It's probably mostly fatigue. I'm 6 months post-op and just finished a
terrible bout with "shoulder blade" pain. My Dr. gave me muscle relaxers to
"snap" me out of it AND I took a vacation. The pain went away. I suspect
mostly because major stresses were eliminated while on vacation. My pain
was mostly on my right side----I'm right handed. I do Everything right
handed---lots of stuff. I believe my pain was due to overworked muscles.
I'm trying to balance my work using my left hand whenever possible so the
right doesn't get so fatigued. it's not easy, but as long as you make a
conscience effort to relax the "new" back muscles and keep them from
stressing out, you might avoid some of this pain. I have to tell myself all
the time to relax and let go....I find myself really dropping my shoulders
and it makes a huge difference. This is all hind sight you can benefit
from!

About "Flat Back"--I thought that was only a Harrington Rod thing. My Dr.
curved my rods in the OR to fit my back so I have a natural sway to my back.
Maybe I'm a little "pitched" forward, but, I agree that's it's only me
trying to find my new balance--nothing to worry about.

The shoulder blade pain was terrible. Try to avoid it by NOT stressing your
back muscles. I know that's easier said than done, but pay attention to how
you are holding yourself, you are probably overdoing it. Your husband is
doing you a HUGE favor to remind you. If you are right handed, use your
left whenever possible and visa versa....I'm dealing with a new back pain
now, from coughing. I'm in Dallas and believe it or not, I have a cold!!!!
New back muscles, new coughing muscles, getting them in shape I guess.
Nothing I can't handle! We've come along way!

Hang in there!
Sindy

Although Elizabeth and Kelley will disagree with me, flatback happens
only rarely with today's instrumentation systems, and only when the
hardware is installed badly.
