Welcome to MITOC!

You've just been added to the mitoc@mit.edu mailling list as you
requested. The change will take about 24 hours to propigate through the
mail system, so after that time you should start receiving any mail sent to
mitoc. What follows is the standard welcome message that describes this
mailing list. Please take a minute and read it.

Welcome to mitoc@mit.edu, the mailing list for the MIT Outing
Club. Offical requests, and requests for list maintainance (removing,
adding addresses, etc) should be sent to mitoc-request@athena.mit.edu.

mitoc@mit.edu is not just an account, but rather a mailing list of the
people in mitoc who like to get information about events by computer.
This means that any mail sent to mitoc@mit.edu will be distributed to
all these people - not just the club officers or such. Feel free to
send anything you think is pertinent to mitoc to mitoc@mit.edu. Normal
topics include: neat sales, group gear buys, club business, upcoming
trips and information about outdoor areas and reserves.

There are two other lists: climbers@mit.edu, for events and
discussion of greater interest to rock, snow and ice climbers; and
paddle@mit.edu for canoe and kayak -related discussion.

In using the list, please remember two things:

1) Just because you read it on this list doesn't make it true. Be
warned that if you accept any advice given on this list, or
participate on any trip advertised here, you do so as a consenting
adult taking responisbility for your own actions and decisions. If
you don't understand what hazards a trip might entail, it's your
responsibility to find out, so that you can make an informed decision
about whether or not to participate. As always, most MITOC members
will be happy to tell you about their experiences on similar types of
trips.

2) Trips that don't claim to be MITOC sponsored aren't MITOC sponsored.
Please don't advertise a trip you might organize using MITOC's name
unless you've cleared it with an officer first.

In addition, if you have an athena account, there is a
directory, /mit/mitoc reached by typing "attach mitoc" containing
other information of interest to club members such as phone
information, etc. Please feel free to add any other information you
feel is appropriate, but follow the labeling conventions given in the
README files.
