I think I can add something here. My experience last month was that,
technically, you can only get the MIT corporate rate with Budget for
"official MIT business." (This is because MIT would be liable in the
case of an accident.) To show this you have to have a car rental
authorization from MIT, or something like that. In reality, all we had
to do was mention the MIT corporate discount number, and we got the
rate. They didn't check anything.

Also - I don't think we should commit to buying the trailer before we
have a look at the truck. It sounds like the trailer might be a bit
superfluous if we had the truck. This'll be sorted out at the Monday
meeting, whichI think is a good idea!

Matthew.

If you're going just for Sunday, would I be able to catch a ride back

HI Marilyn,

I just met with Professor Arvind (whos is on my OQE committee) today.
He's going to be asking me questions about microprocessor architecture,
a topic which I don't know that much about, and which I don't have much
interest in either! I was wondering if it would be possible to swap him
for someone like Paul Viola (AI lab)? His specialty is statistical
machine learning, an area which which is much closer to my interests and
background. I realize it's rather short notice, given that the exam is
May 19.

Professor Arvind mentioned that it is also unusual to have my academic
advisor (Professor Randall) on the committee for my OQE. Is that a
problem?

Thanks for any help you can offer!
Matthew Hollingworth.

Hi Ms Goldwasser,

I have been directed to you by Marilyn Pierce regarding the make-up of
my oral qualifying exam committee. My exam is scheduled for May 19, and
currently Professir Davis, Professer Gray, and Professor Arvind
constitute the committee. I am a little concerned about this.

My situation is that I was enrolled in area II on my arrival at MIT, as
a result of my stated research area of robotics. (I don't have a formal
training in computer science.) My research area has changed dramatically
however; I am now involved in linear system identification research at
Richard Cohen's cardiovascular lab, in HST. My academic interests are
in areas such as control theory, machine learning and signal
processing. I would perhaps be better suited to area I, however my
academic advisor advised me not to change areas.

The result of all this is that I expect the members of the committee to
be asking me questions which are well outside my scope of knowledge. In
particular, Professor Arvind will be asking me about microprocessor
architecture. I have only taken one class in this area, and have little
interest in it.

I wonder if it would be possible to exchange Professor Arvind for
someone like Paul Viola, whose research interests are much more aligned
with my own.

I also wonder if it is usual for a student's academic advisor (Randall
Davis) to also be on the OQE committee. That seems slightly unusual to
me.

Thanks for you help,
Matthew Hollingworth.

Hmmm, you think I ever plan that far ahead?! I don't think anything is
planned for those days yet, but hopefully we'll be able to find some
river to go paddle on. Email me and others closer to the date so we can
make some plans. Should be fun.

Annual Progress Report - Matthew Hollingworth
April 10th, 1999

Submitted to the Scholarships Committee of UWA as a requirement of the Gledden Studentship.

Previous Work

My first year at MIT was not all that successful. I completed four courses with good results, but my research efforts did not come to much at all. I was initially situated at the Artificial Intelligence lab, as a result of my stated interest in robotics. However I became disenchanted with the lab, and the work being done there, and did not manage to find any stimulating research work. This was probably due in part to a substantial change in my beliefs and views about technology. I am also of the opinion that the AI lab has become a little self-important in recent years, and is not many interesting ideas like it was in previous years.

At the end of my first year, I decided that a change of directions was in order. After a summer vacation in the Sierras, I returned to MIT and proceeded to do that.

Research in Progress

At the start of the 98/99 academic year, I joined a cardiovascular research lab, under the supervision of Dr Richard Cohen. (The lab is part of the Health Sciences & Technology department of MIT, however I am still registered under the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.)

The work I have been doing is in the area of cardiovascular system identification (CSI). By treating the heart, lungs and vasculature as a feedback system, linear modeling techniques can be used to characterise the couplings within the system. Specifically, we work with heart rate, arterial blood pressure, instantaneous lung volume and stroke volume. These signals are measured non-invasively, and the transfer functions between them are then obtained using system identification techniques. (Essentially, this involves the computation of the optimal linear model which fits the measured data.)

CSI is a large area of research within the lab. My work concentrates on the automation of the CSI process. The eventual goal of the work is to have a diagnostic tool that can be used in the field. Having attached the necessary sensors (such as ECG electrodes) to a patient, the operator will be able to observe the CSI results within minutes. Of particular interest is the application of this instrumentation to astronauts. The zero-gravity environment has been found to have considerable effect on the cardiovascular system, and an automated CSI instrument would be helpful in the investigation of these effects. NASA is a major supporter of this work, under the auspices of the National Space and Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI).

I have completed a prototype system, and successfully demonstrated it at the annual NSBRI conference in February. A lot remains to be done before it can be used in the field, and I am still working towards this goal. I have also begun to divert my attention towards producing a masters thesis from this work. If all goes to plan, the thesis will be complete some time in the next four months or so.

Coursework

As required by the masters program at MIT, I have taken several graduate-level courses. These are listed below:

Semester
Course
Grade

Fall 97
6.866 Machine Vision
A+

Fall 97
6.840 Theory of Computation
B

Spring 98
6.836 Embodied Intelligence
B

Spring 98
6.823 Computer System Architecture
A

Fall 98
6.893 Machine Learning
A

Spring 99
6.432 Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation

I have enjoyed the coursework to a certain extent, although I do believe there is a limit to how many classes it us productive to take! My classes have certainly substantially extended my knowledge. Despite MIT's external reputation, I have not found the teaching here to be of substantially better quality than that at UWA.

Other Activities

I have not had any teaching experience as of yet. At MIT this usually begins in the doctoral program, not the masters program.

The NSBRI conference that I mentioned above was a significant milestone for me. I was required to produce a working demonstration of a project I had started only five months earlier. I was really pleased to achieve that goal. The very successful demonstration that I gave was important for the lab's continued support by the NSBRI.

Outside of academia, my life is fun and fulfilling, and much more enjoyable than ever before. I have taken up a number of new pursuits with vigor, include rock climbing, ice climbing and whitewater paddling. I have also met a multitude of interesting people, particularly through the MIT Outing Club. My enjoyment of these activities and people, combined with my renewed academic progress, has helped me become a much more confident and happy person.

Memo to: Committee Monitoring Matthew Hollingworth's Academic Progress
From: Richard J. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D.
Date: April 21, 1999
Re: Matthew Hollingworth

I am delighted to report on the progress of Matthew Hollingworth's research work in my laboratory. Matthew joined the laboratory in September, 1998. The project I assigned to him involved the development of a clinical instrument that would perform cardiovascular system identification at the bedside. Cardiovascular system identification is a technique for analyzing closed-loop cardiovascular regulation by stochastic analysis of second-to-second fluctuations in physiologic signals such as heart rate, arterial blood pressure, cardiac output, and respiration. The relationship between the fluctuations in the various signals are analyzed so as to create a closed-loop model of cardiovascular regulation. Then one can examine how the parameters of the model change when the physiologic state of the subject changes as a result of disease processes or as a result of an intervention.

The method of cardiovascular system identification was developed in my laboratory, but its implementation to date has involved a rather cumbersome off-line set of analyses. The goal of Matthew's project is to acquire the signals and perform the system identification in an automated fashion at the bedside. In this way cardiovascular system identification will be available to non-expert users who are not familiar with signal processing techniques.

Matthew has done a terrific job. He very quickly mastered the methodology. He then developed a computer-based system to acquire the signals and process them. He has already developed a working system which has a very friendly user interface. He is currently improving the system and adding additional features. Matthew has accomplished all this with great proficiency in a very short period of time. We expect to have a system ready for beta-testing in the field by the summer.

It has been a delight to have Matthew Hollingworth in the laboratory.

Brian Bingham's the WW chair at the moment; I'm pretty sure you know
him. (Bill graduated and is living/working in NH now. Saw him at the
West on the weekend, with his brand new kayak!) As for Bonnie, that's

brought her friend Dave along!! :)

Hope to see you in June!

Hector - I am just about always able to work office on Mondays, if you
don't have anyone else lined up. Just make sure to let me know;
otherwise I assume someone else is on. Maybe it's time to make up a

Hi Brian, thanks for following up. I got to paddle a Jive in the pool

However I did decide that $600 is a little more than I can afford at the
moment. I'll have to wait until used Jives come down in price a bit, or
maybe buy an older model boat. Thanks though - good luck selling your

give a hand with the adventure race.) Can you send me a registration

I agree with Howard--you can avoid the crowds by hitting one of the less
populated routes and with that kind of time you can do a lot of climbs in the
NW. There is Eliot Headwall on Hood, Jefferson, Adams, Shuksan, Baker--all
within a few hours of Rainier. Do 'em all!

Hi guys.

Julie and I are thinking "Gunks, next weekend." I thought I'd doing some
preliminary checking around and see if you guys would be interested?
Julie would like to go one last time before she heads to the West Coast.
(Where there's absolutely no climbing at all, poor Julie. ;) Me, I want
to go back and scare myself shitless leading Asphodel. (As I scared
myself shitless leading Jackie on Saturday.) And Julie might even do
High E.

Anyway it's not certain yet or anything, but let me know if you're
interested.

Those boots should be fine. It's really no big deal though; if you
weren't otherwise going to take them, then don't take them. You don't
want to be carrying around anything you're not using all over Europe!

Well I don't think you're too old to do it actually. Hey Mount
Washington is just a long day hike and that's 6300 feet. You could do
that for sure. If you learnt the skills I don't see why it would beyond
you to go over to NZ and do some mountaineering there. That's what I
plan to do! And there are plenty of non-technical mountaineering routes
too, i.e. just trudge up a snow ridge to the top. It's only beyond you
if you think it is. Giving up smoking might be a good idea though, hint
hint nudge nudge.

> 2.Qantas will have an "Account Service Fee" after June 1999 of $20 every

Yeah right! No thanks. Maybe I'll be able to go somewhere on the points
I've got, but I doubt it. That frequent flyer stuff never seemed to work
out for me. (Partly because the cheap student flights I've take here are
on non-partner airlines.)

The wheelchairs sounds like an excellent idea, I hope Nanna's enjoying
it.

Say thanks to Patrick for his email, it's nice to hear from him.

Oh, and let it be on record that, as of May 4 I've remembered B&P's
birthday. Just in case I forget on the day <shameful grin>. Not that I
plan to do that. I'll try to call... maybe in the morning?

> We love getting your emails, to check out on where you've been and what
> wonderful experiences you seem to be having- once again please be
> careful!!

Yeah I'm always careful. I did have a scare on the weekend though! We
went climbing at the Gunks. I lead a few pitches... I'm in the process
of learning the fine art of leading on rock. The pitches I did were 5.4
and 5.5, both really easy as far as climbing goes. On the 5.5 pitch, I
had climbed up so that my feet were about 2 feet above my last piece
(i.e. I would have fallen ten feet easily). The rock face had got
increasingly bare, and my arms were getting tired, and I was getting
scared! Anyway, I was able to traverse over a bit (I had gone off-route
by a metre or so), and get to a crack which I was able to protect (i.e.
put a cam in and clip in the rope). Ended up getting over that little
bit just fine, but it was kind of scary. That's what rock climbing is
all about!

On the work front things are going pretty shitty. I'm still having
difficulty with the class I'm taking. I submitted my thesis proposal on
Friday, so I guess that's alright. I just feel totaly bored and can't
get any work done though. Also I've got my oral qualifying exam coming
up on May 19, I think that could possibly be a disaster, I don't know. I
did get permission to have a bit of extra time for my thesis if I need.
Aggh.

Barney is coming to visit at the end of July, for ten days or so. I'm
going to drag him out kayaking and rock climbing I think. Maybe I'll
scare him shitless on a climb called High Exposure! :) I'm looking
forward to having him here.

> Again, we are still planning on coming over there in Dec(millenium bug
> notwithstanding) ,but are waiting to hear from you about that- I guess we
> will have to look into making some bookings soon.

I might be able to give you a better answer about that after I have my
oral qualifier in a few weeks. That will be telling.

Matthew.

p.s. Hey Mum, I just got your email while I was typing this!

p.p.s. Tell Patrick and/or Bronwen (and/or Verity, why not?) to learn
rock climbing so I can take them rock climbing when I get back to
Australia. I'd take them ice climbing but I don't like my chances of
finding ice in the outback. :)

Hmmm... let's see, I know the figure eight, clove hitch, girth hitch,
double fisherman's, waterknot... I guess that's all climbers need. Sure,
I'll do it, not that I'm a pro climber or anything.

We will have to get some ropes for this. One rope for two people (one
end each). I have two ropes, club has three... we might run short.

p.s. If you have to announce it, don't mention my name :)

Hi Steve. I'm the sucker who's doing the knot demo tomorrow! Mike
forwared your reply to me. Regarding the following:

> Also, it should be discussed why most of us don't use a
> bowline to tie into our harness, why you should not use a biner to
> clip the rope to a harness, and why an overhand knot for tying
> rapels together is sometimes refered to as a form of European birth control.

I know this stuff, but don't actually know why. What's the problem with
the bowline? (Freedom of the Hills says it's okay.) Why not a biner
between rope and harness? (My guess: it's an unnecessary extra link, and
there's a possibility of cross-loading?)

I also heard the overhand for connecting rappel ropes referred to as the
European death knot. But it _is_ the UIAA recommended knot...! Damned if
I'd trust it. :) I've always used a double fisherman, but I hear the
rewoven eight is easier to untie.

I think that's a good idea. We can figure out where our pieces will go
and how to arrange the display cases. Then we'll be free to put up our
work whenever it's convenient.

How about 2pm? Any time is okay for me.

Hi Hector,

- I can run desk this Monday. I'll fill in that schedule sometime soon.

- Didn't find any MITOC mail from Bank Boston.

- We did however get mail from Black Diamond. MITOC can buy stuff from
BD under their "University Rock Pro Program." You should see the price
list, the stuff is unbelievably cheap! Pity it's only for club
equipment. (i.e. we can't compile a group order or anything.) Anyway,
thought I'd let you know, in case you think the club needs any new
climbing equipment. (How old are those ropes anyway?)

Hope your oral exam goes well!

Greg- coincidentally, I have been intrigued about how people climb the

> What are you doing this summer? I forget.

I have to work a lot, but I hope to go somewhere in August. I have been
talking to Julie and others about maybe climbing in the Sierras or the
Tetons. There are a bunch or routes I've picked out of guide books which
look easy enough - mostly scrambling with some easy technical climbing
pitches too (e.g. the Matthes Crest traverse, and Cathedral Peak, east
buttress, in the Sierras, and Mount Moran, CMC route, in the Tetons).
It's all just vague ideas at the moment though.

That's okay... we were just hashing out a new paper-based system then.
If think we've organized it pretty well, got ride of most of the
problems. And it shouldn't be too hard to computerize it if we ever
decide to do that.

Hi,

I thought you guys should know, we got mail from BD last week about
their educational purchase program. (They give big discounts for
purchases of outing club equipment, i.e. 40%) I know Steve atkins ran an
order last year. Is there interest this year among climbers for taking
advantage of this deal? (Officially the deal is not available to
individuals.) I don't think the club has any particular need for gear at
the moment.

There is no expiration date, the program is ongoing. They like to have
an order of at least $1000 to make it worth their while, although this
is not a strict rule.

> At this discount, I would consider getting some Camelots for the outing
> club, maybe double ropes. Can you tell me if these are included as well?

Basically, you can order any BD item whatsoever at the reduced rate.
e.g. #3.5 camelot, $43. Buying rock pro would mean the club making a
decision on whether to get more involved with rockclimbing education
(i.e. trad climbing).

Sure, you've taken on a lot with Acadia. I could be convinced to oversee
an order. That's not the problem; the problem is whether it's alright to
abuse the program by buying gear for individuals. I gather this has been
done before. (e.g. Dave's portaledge.)

Annual fee is $10, although this late in the year we drop it to $5. You
can get a membership by dropping by during office hours (5-6 Mondays,
8-9 Thursdays). A membership is only necessary if you want to rent gear,

Hi Christine,

I just thought of a possible location for an MIT climbing wall. The
Walker Memorial building has two squash courts in the basement. It looks
like they may not be in use, especially since there are also courts in
the athletics centre. A squash court would be an ideal place for a
climbing gym...

Tim, there was a message from Kristen, from a Borders Bookstore in
Tennessee. She wanted to know:

- how much the books cost
- would we give Borders a discount (yeah right)
- how much would shipping cost for two copies to Tennessee
- do we want prepayment, and if so will a credit card suffice?

She is at 734 477 1922.

It looks great. You should compress the top a bit, so we can fit two
forms on a standard-sized sheet of paper. Also, I think the deskworker
initials field is not that clear (giver/taker?). Maybe out/in or
something like that might be beter. Minor point.

Assuming good weather, we could go there next weekend if you're
interested. (Yeah yeah you have exams. So do I, I guess.)
