Hi all, I have finally been able to put in a request for new office
keys. You should be able to pick them up at CAC (W20-500) sometime next
week. Sorry it took so long!

Matthew.

Rick - breaking news - I just got email from Dave, saying I can pick up
photocopies from his book today. So there's no need to send your book
over. (I wouldn't trust MIT mail with a book that valuable anyway! :)
Thanks all the same.

Have a good weekend. I'm looking forward to hearing about everyone's
struggles on Penal Servitude! (Especially Mike, I think he needs some
humbling, he he.)

Bernardo, if you're thinking of the White Mountains, I'd wait a few
weeks - as of last weekend, at least, the foliage in the White Mountains
hasn't really started yet. Vermont is more advanced, I think. As for
moderate trails, the Welch-Dickey loop on the Kankamangus highway isn't
too bad. Check out the AMC White Mountains Guide. There are many others,
I'm sure.

No, it's further in along the Kancamanuse. Come to think of it though,
the Pemi wilderness trail, which follows up the Pemi, crosses a bridge,
and goes back down the other side, sounds ideal.

Can you remember how you get to the start of the climb? Do you take the
climber's trail on the right hand side of the cliff, then walk left
along the base, or is there another trail?

Hi Kate, I did get your emails, I was just away for the weekend is all.
Hope your conference went well. I went paddling, had a fine time!

First thing: tomorrow looks like the only sunny day this week before
rain moves in. Unless you can make it then (and it sounds like you
can't, with your cold, and your schedule), we'll have to see how next
week works out... (Next week is my last week unfortunately.)

I finally got some details about Moby Grape. It's a good deal more of a
challenge than I had thought. :) It's quit long - nine pitches in all,
going up the taller part of the cliff. Seven of the nine pitches are
5.8!! I'm still really psyched to do it before I go though. But the
harder nature of the climb means a couple of things. Firstly, I'd want
to start _way_ early! (i.e. drive up the night before, hike up in
pre-dawn.) Secondly, the odds that we'd have to retreat are higher. 5.8
is at my leading limit. (You saw me bail on Black Lung!) I could resort
to aiding a hard move to make progress if I got stuck, but even so
there's a chance we'd get stuck half-way up, and have to rap off.
Nonetheless, I'm motivated and excited to try it, but if you don't like
the sound of it I would totally understand! Climbing at Whitehorse is
also another possibility.

Anyway, I hope your cold clears up soon. Let me know what's what!

Matthew.

Hi Boris - nice trip report! I'm hoping to try that climb in the next
week or two. Could give me some advice? In particular:
- How is the protection overall?
- What approach trail do you take?
(I assume it's the one on the right side of the cliff?)
- Is routefinding easy or hard?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks very much for the invitation! The trouble is, I'm moving back to
Australia in a few weeks, so I don't think I'll be able to climb with
you. I had thought to ask you too, but I've really got just no time left
at all - my remaining weekends are already planned. It's kind of a
shame, since I have often been on the lookout for new climbing partners.
Oh well. :(

All the best,

Hector, I've got a tent, but would really prefer not to share - it gets
a little crowded with two.

And hey, don't forget about my sea kayak! :) I really despised canoeing
four miles last year. Who is taking up the canoes and kayaks?

Rebecca - according to the AMC White Mountain Guide, a couple of trails
get to the summit of Chocorua. The Piper Trail, leaving from route 16,
is 4.5 miles and takes 3.5 hrs. The Liberty Trail, leacing from Paugus
Mill Road, FR 68 (?), is 3.9 miles and takes 3hrs 20 mins (a "steady,
moderate pace"). There is also another trail, the Brook Trail, which
starts from the same place as the Liberty Trail, goes a different way,
and then rejoins the Liberty Trail 0.2 miles from the summit. ("Much
more scenic, but also much more difficult than the Liberty Trail.") Book
suggests that the Brook Trail up, and the Liberty Trail down, is an
excellent loop.

I've never hiked Chocorua, although the summit looks spectacular from
Route 16. If you do it, write a trip report!

There should be a few more spare keys at CAC now. I'll put Paul's name
on the list.

I'd prefer not to split the system, since it'll be a hassle to sell

The skates might be 11.5 or 12, I'm not sure. I'm an 11.5 normally. I
can't say for sure, but I suspect they'd be a bit big for you. You're
welcome to try them on, it'd be the best way to find out. If you're free
any time tomorrow (before 4pm), feel free to drop by Ashdown and you can
try them on.

Hector - I gather you spoke to Luke and heard that I was thinking about
skipping Lake George. Don't worry, I'm pretty sure I'll be going! (I
would have told you otherwise.)

I had thought to maybe climb with Luke, which I've been meaning to do
for a while, but the weather and his schedule aren't working out. The
other thing is that Carolyn (not my favourite person) is also going to
Lake George. I had more than enough of her last weekend. But I can avoid
her easily enough, there'll be a lot of people. :)

Your organizational efforts for this weekend are appreciated, I assure
you. :)

See you soon,
Matthew.

Told you it'd be a great climb! :) Rock-fall and route-finding freaked
me out before I climbed on Cannon, too, but I know what it's like now.
That's the main reason why I always try to be first on the climb at
Cannon. (And have always succeeded in doing so.) That's also a good
reason for sticking to the well-travelled classics - they're much
cleaner.

As for weather, Sunday still looks a little too risky. (I wouldn't want
to climb there with a front bearing down on me anyway.) So if you want
to go Saturday let me know, but don't screw up your party if you don't
want to. Lake George will be fun too. Because the climb is long, the
days are shorter, and the moves are hard, I'd want to get a _really_
early start, which is another disincentive for you! :)

Anyway, I'll check for your email this afternoon. I have to leave at
5.00pm for Lake George, BTW.

Forget that, I should have known better than to expect them to be
prompt.

Three extra keys have been ordered, but it might take them a while to
arrive. You can check at the CAC (W20-500). If you want to hurry up the
process, the guy to hassle is David Flett (flett@mit.edu).

Possibly - I don't know anything off hand, though, I'll ask Luke (who's
organizing). However a good day's climbing ends just after sunset, so we
won't necessarily be there too early! :)

Hi Collete. Luke posted a gear recall to the list a while back (he's the
one organizing fall circus). If you just want packs it'd probably be
alright, but if by "backpacking" you mean an overnight trip (i.e. you'll
need sleeping bags), that might be a problem. Sleeping bags are often
all used during a circus... Anyway, it's not really my place to say, you
should probably email Luke (lukesos@mit.edu) to see if you're in luck or
not. I guess it'll also depend on how much stuff you need.

I hope it works out! BTW, don't skimp on sleeping bag warmth if you're
tenting - it's starting to get pretty cool up in NH at night! :)

Dear Ms Shimoda,

It occurred to me that I might not have health insurance coverage in the
last few days before I return (which is on October 12). I was under the
impression that my Fulbright health insurance coverage lasted until my
departure, but with the problems I've had regarding my departure date, I
realized that maybe this isn't the case. Can you let me know one way or
the other - I'll get some travel insurance if I don't have coverage.

Thanks,
Matthew Hollingworth.

The MIT Budget BCD is T240202 - use it to book on the web. But Robert

No, I was just about to write back to you actually. Would you be willing
to compromise and settle on $250? I honestly think it's a really good
deal at that price, the components are good quality and in very good
condition.

If we could arrange to make the sale tomorrow, that would be good, since

Hi guys! I know you hard-core hikers have a 30-mile hike planned for
Saturday and all, but it seems Luke was counting on you all to lead
hiking trips for ths Circus... :) Maybe you might want to consider doing
it another time (e.g. the Monday holiday)? Anyway, just thought you
should consider it.

See you all on the weekend! (My last weekend, oh dear.. )

Alex Lowe was apparently caught in an avalance in the Karakorum
yesterday, and is presumed dead. I heard this from a shop assistant
today, and mountainzone.com also has the story.

I was planning to take a hike to Chocorua, but I hurt my ankle climbing
last Saturday. I'm not quite sure yet if I'll be up to hiking on
Saturday, we'll see.

He's a pretty awesome mixed climber and alpinist, one of the best in the
country. ('Mixed' means mixed rock and ice - really insane stuff! It's
where people are 'pushing the limits' these days.)

Sure. It's on the metal shelves next to the sink in 504. I'll be away
until Monday, so I can't get it to you myself. Unfortunately the others
in the suite might lock the outer door, so you might have to try a few
times before you can get in. Feel free to leave a few bucks under my
door (504C) if you think the toaster's worth anything. :)

Hi! As my departure date gets closer, I'm increasinly anxious to sell my
stereo! If you still want it at $200, it's yours. Only problem is, I'm
away until Tuesday. Can you meet me Tuesday morning to check it out? I
didn't see before that you're from Harvard, so I realize it's not
straightforward for you to come over here. (I think it's a deal worth
going out of your way for though.)

Let me know,
Matthew.

I'm at Ashdown house, at MIT. This is the building at the corner of
Memorial Drive and Mass Ave, just next to the Harvard Bridge. If you
were to come and take a look at the stereo, you'd have to call me from
the front desk (x 59809, or 225 9809 externally), and I'd come down to
let you in.

Assuming you do buy the stereo, can I ask that you pay in cash? I've
closed my bank accounts, so I can't easily cash a check. I'm also still
hoping you'd be willing to pay $250, but I won't insist.

BTW my plans for today fell through, so I will be around all today if
you'd like to come by.

Thanks!
Matthew.

Hiya Kate. I'm wondering if you'd be up for climbing tomorrow - it'd be
my last chance to go with you. I had plans for today and tomorrow, but
because of the obnoxious car-rental companies, I couldn't get my car
(under 25 and all that, and all the other companies were sold out too.)
Friday through Sunday I have plans too, but tomorrow is free! If can
make the time and would like to go, let me know. We'd probably go do
something on Whitehorse.

(I had an interesting little mishap last Saturday. I tried leading Black
Lung again - the 5.8 I couldn't finish when we were at Cathedral. This
time, I got over the crux move, but was off-balance and tired, and so I
fell again. Next thing I know I'm hanging _upside down_ !!!! with a hurt
ankle, really scary. The ankles was just twisted, it's mostly better now
and I can climb on it no problem. It's made me think a little about
whether Moby Grape would be a good idea however..!)

I might call you this evening if you don't get the email.

Matthew.

No, I'm not in NY, stupid car rental places wouldn't rent to me (under

Hi Hector! Do you plan to take over desk-manager now that I've gone? Not
that you have to mind you, I'm sure there are several desk-workers (e.g.
Michelle Berris) who might also be able to do it. I figured I should let
people know if you are. There are a bunch of new workers who signed up
over the summer, they're all on the mitoc-desk list. Also, I've been
keeping the current schedule for workers in the desk.schedule.txt file
in the mitoc locker.

_Loved_ your trip report by the way. :)

See you on the weekend!

Hi Kate. Thanks for climbing with me yesterday, it was fun as always! I
realize I may have seemed a bit preoccupied, not intentionally though.
It was just kind of hard being out in the place I love so much, and
knowing I'd be leaving so soon - it was kind of sad. Anyway, it has been
great climbing with you. I'm glad for the climbing we got in, and think
we could have had a lot more fun if I weren't leaving. Let me know about
any climbing adventures you have. Judging from yesterday, you've got
enough leading ability right now to have a lot of fun, so go for it! And
if you're ever down Australia/NZ way, get in touch and maybe we can
arrange a trip! I'd really like that. My home address is:

I'll miss you.

How abut 11 am? Honestly, it'd be best if you try to call me (225 9809),
anytime after 10.30, to let me know when you'll be here. I have some
errands to run today, so if we can do this soon that'd be great!

Matthew.
