Will depart directly from wellesley

So this is how the rides are right now and I dont expect them to change.

Shelters:
Elron car is set with Shelter, Matt is set, Elron has his own tent, and
Kim rented one from the club, so she can share with Paulina

Janelle's car can take Amanda's 4 person tent.

>From Hector and Scott's car,
Sunil James Brygg and Adam I guess needs tent.
So I take that Sunil will get a 2p tent for him and Adam,
and James or Brygg will drop by the office to get another tent
(and do you guys need bags?).

Also Scott and I will need some help with the canoes and canoe trailer,
we'll be working on it at the Boathouse on Friday after 1pm. If you can spare
30 minutes or an hour and come and help, let me know when you could, and I will
let you know if we can/will use your help.

I will try to be at the office today
(office hours are from 8p-9p and bring a checkbook for deposit).

The directions and a message from the organizers is at the end
regarding food and climbing. I will take 3 ropes total and my
personal gear enough to setup 3 top ropes. I don't know how the
climbing is going to be, I am going to try to get up early saturday and
checkout a place. If climbing happens, and you want to do it
(no experience necessary), make sure you get shoes, harness and helmet
from the club or let me know if you can't

i took a trip 2 years ago, at a place much closer. Unfortunately, however,
the rock where i climbed is complete shit. i picked a nice beginner route,
went up to clean it, and in the process broke off the majority of the
handholds...if you do just pick somewhere, i highly reccomend helmets.
There's lots of cliffs around, so if you get there early enough feel free to
scout them out.

as for food, it will be buffet style. We'll be doing all the cooking, but
help will be apreciated.

leaving the mitoc canoe trailer at the beach we put it on sounds like a
great idea...

see you there,
eric

Hi Guys,
I would like to propose a change in the fines web page:
it says:

Rental Gear is due back during office hours one week after it has been
rented. If the office is closed due to a holiday or lack of desk staff
on a Monday the rental period will be extended until Thursday of that
week. Members are responsible for knowing when the MITOC office will
be open. Unless prior arrangements were made at the time of rental,
gear kept out longer than one week is considered late and the member
renting the gear will be assessed late fines. Late fines for
equipement are assessed at the rate of one nights rental for every
office hour the gear is overdue. Late fees for cabin keys are $10 /
week overdue. We do not waive late fees for any reason. Any item late
by four or more weeks will be considered lost or stolen and the
deposit will be forfeited and the deposit check cashed so that we may
replace the missing equipment for other members' use.

I would like to change the first two sentences to:

Rental Gear is due back during office hours one week after it has been
rented. If the office is closed due to a lack of desk staff, and
announcement will be made on the official mailing list and the rental
period will be extended one week. Members are responsible for knowing
when the MITOC office will be <link to office hours>open and how the
schedule is affected by holidays</link>.

Tell me what you think, and if we make this change we might have to
update the poster in the office.

I'll talk to the person whose party I am going to. Maybe I'll see if I can
get out of that party early. I'll let you know early this afternoon.
However, that objective danger of rockfall freaks me out. :P Below is what
Jim Paradis had to say about the climb.

Hi Matthew,
I have a question about MITOC and thought you
might know the answer: I am planning a hiking
trip for this weekend, but since it is also
Fall Circus this weekend are there going to
be any rentals available? I was hoping stuff
like backpacks would still be available for
renting.
Thanks! Hope everything is going well with you :)

     Hi Matthew,

Unfortunately, your Fulbright health insurance coverage was only valid through
your grant end date, 8/31/99. You might want to purchase some travelers'
insurance to cover you until your date of departure on the 12th. I hope that
you have been enjoying your last days in the United States, and I wish you a
safe trip back to Australia.

Best wishes,

     Dear Ms Shimoda,

It occurred to me that I might not have health insurance coverage in
the last few days before I return (which is on October 12). I was
under the impression that my Fulbright health insurance coverage
lasted until my departure, but with the problems I've had regarding my
departure date, I realized that maybe this isn't the case. Can you let
me know one way or the other - I'll get some travel insurance if I
     don't have coverage.

     Thanks,

A true pity that someone died this weekend... Paddle carefully at
floodstage!!!

People should also (on a lighter note) read the article on the NY AMC page
about access to rivers. Recreational Use has apparently been established as
the test in New York. This issue has been a hotbed for access to the Moose
River (which is the site of a festival in a couple weeks). Another river
conservation victory.

I'm going up to Dracut this Wednesday. There's space for one

know if you're interested. Also let me know if you have a car
and can take others, and I'll coordinate rides.

That was the plan. I was hoping to get as much stuff as possible back from

Hello,

After my request for information on Mt. Chocorua last week, I had
a couple of people ask me to post a trip report if I went, so
here it is.

____________________________________________________

Mt. Chocorua

Up: Carter Ledge Trail, starts off of 16 at the White Ledge Campground
Length: about 5.2 miles, Elevation Gain: Technically 2500' total,
but with lots of up and down.

Down: Piper Trail, then along 16 back to White Ledge Campground.

Total time: 5.25 hours including lunch at the summit.
_____________________________________________________

Chocorua is famed as one of the most beautiful mountains in the
White Mountains, as well as having some of the most spectacular
views from its bald peak. Unfortunately, this fame, and its
relatively easy access up the Piper and Liberty Trails means that it
is excessively crowded. How to avoid the crowds? Don't take the
Piper or Liberty Trails!

In our quest for solitude, we chose the Carter Ledge trail. The
trail was stunningly beautiful. It runs up a ledge that runs across
a valley from Chocorua itself, giving you spectacular views of the
lake-filled valley, the fall foliage, and Chocorua itself. The
trail runs through a variety of terrain, including heavily wooded
areas, scrub, bare rock, and a lovely (but slippery) stretch of
moss covered rocks and water. Once you get up onto the ridge itself,
there are a multitude of places to stop and admire the scenery, thanks
to the steep sides of the ridge. On what must have been one of the
most beautiful weekends of the autumn, with the fall leaves near peak
color, we ran into exactly 4 other hikers on the entire trip up (until
we reached the top, that is).

So, what are the downsides of this amazing hike? Well, the trail
less travelled means the trail less maintainted: trail markers and
sometimes the trail itself were frequently difficult to find. There
were several downed trees across the trail that looked like remnants of
the ice storm a couple winters back. It is not the most direct route
to the peak: it is longer, and loses elevation several times. And,
oh yes, the AMC White Mountains Guide politely says 'rocks can be
slippery when wet', what they fail to mention is that the rocks are
ALWAYS wet, even on a bright, sunshine filled afternoon several days
after the most recent rain!!! The last 500' or so up to the ridge
that connects to Chocorua reminded me that I really need to get new
climbing shoes...I mean, hiking boots...._very_ steep, but lots of fun!

Unfortunately, when you reach the top, you are brought back to sudden
realization that you are still in the East Coast's playground. On
this particular day, even the smaller peaks north of Chocorua had
10-20 people lounging on them, and we actually stopped before going
up onto Chocorua itself, because there were so many people up top
that it looked like NO FUN!

We were in a hurry, so we took the Piper Trail back down. Piper trail
is quite steep for the first half of it, and then rather tame for
the second half. The trail is quite pretty, but it is immensely heavily
travelled. We managed not to encounter too many people, mostly because
we left the peak well before people would need to start heading down
to avoid being caught by sundown. Piper would probably be a wonderful
trail to take during a weekday.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

Hi all!

I almost forgot how much fun it is to organize large club events...

Anyway, on to business.

Transportation:

Right now we have 39 car spaces and 38 people signed up. We may need to
rent. Any suggestions as to the current best places for car rental? Does
anyone still have that special MIT number for Budget(?) that Matt(?)
mentioned in the meeting? Also, is anyone willing to be here Friday
sending people on their way? I need to leave Boston by 5:30 to go stop by
IME and make a pick-up (don't even ask...). I will supply you with all the
finished paperwork and organize everything as completely as possible, so
you should have to do no more than put people into cars and send them on
the way.

Food:

Suggestions and volunteers would be welcome to help with this. Otherwise
we are looking at a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, and oatmeal and fruit
breakfasts. So if you would like to have a say about what you eat, let me
know...

Signup sheet is working great, thanks to Hector, Greg, and Robert...

Luke

That is out of the question.

I think Hector's plan is good, provided they are willing to shell out
the extra, per Kili method. We are not a charity.. :)

I just got off the phone with Chris Lathrop who is the NE sales
representative for Mountain Hardwear. We can get MH gear at wholesale!

I think we should buy *all* sleeping bags and tents from them.

Chris is sending me a complete catalog and price list. It should be here
tomorrow. I asked him for a sample of prices for this discussion:

Light Wedge 2: Retail: $260 Wholesale: $158
Light Wedge 3: Retail: $295	Wholesale: $171

It appears that the prices will be approximately 40% off retail, which I
think is an amazing deal.

Go to www.mountainhardwear.com to see their other gear and retail prices.

Maintaining this relationship with them is going to require some restraint
on our part. It sounds like 2-3 purchases a year will be tolerable. We
will need to be extremely selective about who can purchase personal gear
with this deal. They don't mind a small group of the club's leadership
buying personal gear, but if it gets out of hand, they will drop us.

Cheers,
--Tim

I don't know anything about a MIT deal but we certainly don't
have a MITOC deal.

I do know about a HI-AYH he might be interested in. You probably
need to show prook of HI-AYH membership when you pick up the
car. The local HI-AYH office is at 1105 Comm. Ave. near EMS. I
can give more details about membership and the local office if
you want. The following info came from:

NB: it looks to me from the forwarded email that the solar team wants
to borrow the tents, as in not pay. Not that they wouldn't if we
asked them, but I wouldn't call it a foregone conclusion.

The "short" bags are 6'1" long, the "regular" are 6'6", and the "long"
are 7'. In the interest of shorter people/women, I think we *at
least* need to get some regular ones, and possibly even some short
ones.

My 2 cents.
