Hi Matthew

My name is Dani Ivanovski. I am currently assisting in the administration
of Gledden Studentships.
The Scholarships Committee had recently resolved to renew your studentship
for the second and final year.
Your award is comprised of the following components:

Living Allowance: $20,822
Fees Allowance 13,000

Referring to last year's transaction details, it appears that your living
allowance was credited to a local bank a/c as a result of the weak
Australian dollar. I also noticed that last years fees allowance was paid
directly to MIT on invoice. Please indicate if you wish your 1999
entitlements to be distributed in the same way.

Looking forward to hearing from you shortly.

Kind regards

D IVANOVSKI
for Director
Financial Services

Hi Matthew -

you're so sweet to come all the way across campus! I'd almost forgotten
about the t shirt. I actually am in town - I'm not doing much climbing, or
anything else for that matter, besides writing my thesis (gotta finish by
July 28!)

So maybe we can meet up on campus and do the ol' t-shirt swap. I'm here
everyday, but lately my day has been starting later rather than earlier - as
you figured out this morning.

Hi everyone,

We should try to be a little organized and make sure this whole
assault thing gets worked out. At this point, I almost feel like
forgetting about it all, but various people have suggested things that
I wouldn't have thought of, that might be good ideas.

-We should ask the Pelham PD for photocopies of our statements,
if only so we remember the details if we need to. Maybe Peeto
(or his parents?) could deal with this since he's a local.

-We should also find out from the PD what they're being charged
with. If it's just assault, that seems kind of light. I don't
know enough about how this works to know if we have any influence
 over that.

-Also, presumably the people who got stitches have medical costs
even if they were partly covered by insurance. We could try to
get that repaid in small-claims court (?) or something. Getting
copies of the hospital records, and anything the PD wrote down
when they first looked at the injuries, would be useful for this,
 I think.

ANS gets its information from the alumni database that is maintained by the
Alumni Records office. This database only includes former MIT students who
received a degree from MIT.

In order to have yourself added to the database, please contact the Alumni
Records office via email at mitalum@mitvmc.mit.edu or by telephone at
617-253-8270.

You will need to provide Alumni Records with the following:

- Your legal name as it would appear in your official MIT records
(transcript/personnel file)
- MIT ID number
- Date of Birth
- Dates you attended/worked at MIT
- Course (if applicable)
- Your desired class and department affiliations (if applicable)
- Current home address / telephone
- Current business address / telephone
- Email address

You should also include a brief note explaining that you would like to be
added to the database so that you can take advantage of ANS' services.

The database administrators can then verify your status and add you to the
database. After you have been added to the database, you will be able to
register for ANS.

We appreciate your interest in ANS. If I can assist you in any way, please
feel free to email me.

Sincerely,

Aileen Kawabe

Matthew!!!

I'm so embarrassed - I haven't even responded yet to your climbing
invitation of a month ago and now you're off to another continent!!!!!

When do you leave? Let me buy you lunch, a beer, or come over for dinner
before you go!

I've finished my thesis (my lame excuse for not responding to your email -
of course, I didn't respond to anybody's email so don't take it personally!)
and am just wrapping things up for the next week or so.... let me know when
is a good for you....

Hi Matthew,

My name is Richard. I am not sure if you remember, but
I briefly met with you earlier during this summer in the Cohen Lab.
I am writing to ask you for some help regarding the work you
have done with the automated CSI project.

Specifically, I have been given the task of adding a
few extra features to what you have already accomplished. But
before I forge ahead, I was wondering if you had any bugs which
you have not had a chance to fix? Is there a specific version
which you consider more complete than the rest?

I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions that
you can give me regarding your project. It is always a rather
daunting task to have to follow up on someone's work.

Thank you in advance for your time,
Richard Chen

Hey Matt

Well I am back in Australia and nothing has changed. Which is kind of
comforting in a way but really sad in another. When are you coming back,
the Schnapps arrived and I am waiting for you to come home so we can all
share it.

Thanks for letting me stay with you in Boston. It was the perfect end to a
pretty hectic holiday (in places). Have you made contact with Alvin and
Karla?

The time I spent in Peterborough, Canada was also quite relaxing. Except
the day I went to Canada's Wonderland and ran around, catching all the
rollercoaster rides. It made me feel like such a kid. The family I was
staying with was really friendly to me. We spent a couple of days at their
grandparents cottage, right on one lake. Apparently the lake freezes over
and you can walk across it. A bit weird for me.

I tried to explain our idea of Christmas in Australia and they couldn't
imagine the holidays without snow. But that is the way it is. We are
worlds apart.

Anyway, I am getting quite tired staring at this computer (my friend the
computer) so I'll say goodbye and I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Barney

p.s. I almost forgot, Steve and Angus have roped Conrad and I into
repainting Steve's father's 45ft sail boat. So when you get back, an extra
set of hands will help. Plus it is good to get out of the house once in a
while. I still haven't found a job either but that doesn't worry me just
yet.

Although this comes very shortly after Paul's announcement, it
was in classic MITOC form.

Anyway, Christine Guth attended this evening's social hour. For those
that don't know her, she accompanied a number of MITOC trips over
the summer, and was a trip leader at Intro Circus. She's
a senior at Wellesley, so has one more year for fun!

It dawned up Hector, Pat, Robert, and me that ...well, we need
a new vice president...and well...we like to sucker (ahem! invite)
people who really don't know what they are getting themselves into.

So, if anybody has any concerns about Chrissy, please let me
know. Else, we have our new VP all picked out and ready to go.

( Paul - it's unfortunate that MIT and research has quickly filled
up your schedule. Even if you can no longer assist in a planning
role, it would be great to see your face at various weekends or
trips. That's why we do this: cause we enjoy the outdoors. )

Ok Folks, so the web form for fall circus is ready to be linked in.
The URL for the form is:
http://mitoc.mit.edu/fallcircus99/signup.html

and the data can be directly opened in excel from
http://mitoc.mit.edu/fallcircus99/fallcircus99.csv

All the organizer (luke) needs to do is to setup a web page for the
trip, and link it from the main page, and also link the signup form
from the trip web page.

Yes, I can still come. I had to worm my way out of a lab group meeting,
but it is not a problem. We can talk about what time to leave and such at
the Fall Circus meeting on Monday. I have to leave at 7:30 Monday because
I have class later that evening, so I'll probably arrive early.
Since we will be at Camelot early anyway, have you heard if anything needs
to be done in preparation for the circus, such as tent pitching, food
buying etc? If so, we could take care of that stuff after our day of
climbing.

Hi all!

I almost forgot how much fun it is to organize large club events...

Anyway, on to business.

Transportation:

Right now we have 39 car spaces and 38 people signed up. We may need to
rent. Any suggestions as to the current best places for car rental? Does
anyone still have that special MIT number for Budget(?) that Matt(?)
mentioned in the meeting? Also, is anyone willing to be here Friday
sending people on their way? I need to leave Boston by 5:30 to go stop by
IME and make a pick-up (don't even ask...). I will supply you with all the
finished paperwork and organize everything as completely as possible, so
you should have to do no more than put people into cars and send them on
the way.

Food:

Suggestions and volunteers would be welcome to help with this. Otherwise
we are looking at a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, and oatmeal and fruit
breakfasts. So if you would like to have a say about what you eat, let me
know...

Signup sheet is working great, thanks to Hector, Greg, and Robert...

Luke

     Hi Matthew,

Unfortunately, your Fulbright health insurance coverage was only valid through
your grant end date, 8/31/99. You might want to purchase some travelers'
insurance to cover you until your date of departure on the 12th. I hope that
you have been enjoying your last days in the United States, and I wish you a
safe trip back to Australia.

Best wishes,

     Dear Ms Shimoda,

It occurred to me that I might not have health insurance coverage in
the last few days before I return (which is on October 12). I was
under the impression that my Fulbright health insurance coverage
lasted until my departure, but with the problems I've had regarding my
departure date, I realized that maybe this isn't the case. Can you let
me know one way or the other - I'll get some travel insurance if I
     don't have coverage.

     Thanks,
     Matthew Hollingworth.

Just a reminder, Fall Circus signup deadline is TODAY at 5 pm. Details and
signup form are available at the MITOC web page -

http://mitoc.mit.edu/

The organizational meeting is tonight at 7 pm in the MITOC office. Please
bring a payment check.

WE NEED DRIVERS FOR CIRCUS. At the moment we are short of car spaces. So
effective now, all drivers will receive a $15 discount on the circus fee
(that applies to all drivers who already signed up, too). If you have any
friend with a car then now is the time to sucker them to come to Circus.

WE NEED SOMEONE TO TOW THE MITOC CANOE TRAILER. MITOC has a canoe trailer
that will need to be towed up to NH. If your car has a hitch and can tow
1500 lbs, please let me know. If you can help us out, you can go for free.

Cheers,

Luke

A true pity that someone died this weekend... Paddle carefully at
floodstage!!!

People should also (on a lighter note) read the article on the NY AMC page
about access to rivers. Recreational Use has apparently been established as
the test in New York. This issue has been a hotbed for access to the Moose
River (which is the site of a festival in a couple weeks). Another river
conservation victory.

I'm going up to Dracut this Wednesday. There's space for one
more person, leaving from Arepa (Alewife) about 6:15. Let me
know if you're interested. Also let me know if you have a car
and can take others, and I'll coordinate rides.

So
effective now, all drivers will receive a $15 discount on the circus
fee
(that applies to all drivers who already signed up, too). If you have
any
friend with a car then now is the time to sucker them to come to
Circus.

WE NEED SOMEONE TO TOW THE MITOC CANOE TRAILER. MITOC has a canoe
trailer
that will need to be towed up to NH. If your car has a hitch and can
tow
1500 lbs, please let me know. If you can help us out, you can go for
free.

Cheers,

Luke

This morning when I woke up at 8, I saw that the rain that had been
falling all night had changed to SNOW! Wet globs of snow fell for about
an hour and accumulated on some surfaces until it changed back to rain.
The radio said the snow line was at 800 feet elevation, but we live at
only a few hundred. All snow was expected to change back to rain except
for the peaks of the High Peaks, where a few inches was expected.

How many weeks ago was it that Susan and I were dying of heat on a climb
at Poke-O (just a few miles away)? 3? 4 at the most? So I guess autumn
in upstate NY lasts 3 weeks... don't blink!

Hello,

After my request for information on Mt. Chocorua last week, I had
a couple of people ask me to post a trip report if I went, so
here it is.

____________________________________________________

Mt. Chocorua

Up: Carter Ledge Trail, starts off of 16 at the White Ledge Campground
Length: about 5.2 miles, Elevation Gain: Technically 2500' total,
but with lots of up and down.

Down: Piper Trail, then along 16 back to White Ledge Campground.

Total time: 5.25 hours including lunch at the summit.
_____________________________________________________

Chocorua is famed as one of the most beautiful mountains in the
White Mountains, as well as having some of the most spectacular
views from its bald peak. Unfortunately, this fame, and its
relatively easy access up the Piper and Liberty Trails means that it
is excessively crowded. How to avoid the crowds? Don't take the
Piper or Liberty Trails!

In our quest for solitude, we chose the Carter Ledge trail. The
trail was stunningly beautiful. It runs up a ledge that runs across
a valley from Chocorua itself, giving you spectacular views of the
lake-filled valley, the fall foliage, and Chocorua itself. The
trail runs through a variety of terrain, including heavily wooded
areas, scrub, bare rock, and a lovely (but slippery) stretch of
moss covered rocks and water. Once you get up onto the ridge itself,
there are a multitude of places to stop and admire the scenery, thanks
to the steep sides of the ridge. On what must have been one of the
most beautiful weekends of the autumn, with the fall leaves near peak
color, we ran into exactly 4 other hikers on the entire trip up (until
we reached the top, that is).

So, what are the downsides of this amazing hike? Well, the trail
less travelled means the trail less maintainted: trail markers and
sometimes the trail itself were frequently difficult to find. There
were several downed trees across the trail that looked like remnants of
the ice storm a couple winters back. It is not the most direct route
to the peak: it is longer, and loses elevation several times. And,
oh yes, the AMC White Mountains Guide politely says 'rocks can be
slippery when wet', what they fail to mention is that the rocks are
ALWAYS wet, even on a bright, sunshine filled afternoon several days
after the most recent rain!!! The last 500' or so up to the ridge
that connects to Chocorua reminded me that I really need to get new
climbing shoes...I mean, hiking boots...._very_ steep, but lots of fun!

Unfortunately, when you reach the top, you are brought back to sudden
realization that you are still in the East Coast's playground. On
this particular day, even the smaller peaks north of Chocorua had
10-20 people lounging on them, and we actually stopped before going
up onto Chocorua itself, because there were so many people up top
that it looked like NO FUN!

We were in a hurry, so we took the Piper Trail back down. Piper trail
is quite steep for the first half of it, and then rather tame for
the second half. The trail is quite pretty, but it is immensely heavily
travelled. We managed not to encounter too many people, mostly because
we left the peak well before people would need to start heading down
to avoid being caught by sundown. Piper would probably be a wonderful
trail to take during a weekday.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

Since they want the equipment for a while and it conflicts with fall
circus, I thought people might want to discuss it.

So it seems that the new EMS tents have been a real success.

Ok BOD voting members please read this message and act upon it. I will say
I am happy with the new plastic boots we got, but we did not get as many or
as good (still very good) of a deal as I wanted since I did not push hard fast
enough, so I dont want it to happen again.

I just received the EMS catalog, and they have a sale coming up in october
7-24 and they are selling the Pamperos (the 3 seasons ones we have) for $169
($269 retail) , I think this is the price we got them for.
They also have 20o synthetic bags for $124/$135 (reg/long).
(retail 149/159)

I figure we could probably get 4 of these tents (or more) and rent them to the Solar
team for say $60 or 70 (12 days of use, but then again they are also taking them
to australia), how much did we charge the Kilimanjaro People?

after that we can probably have a sort of garage sale and get rid of some of the older
tents, or maybe save them for when other clubs need them for simple stuff.
(most likeley sell them cheap $40 or so). We can even sell them to other clubs
I know for example Mt Holyoke would be interested in what we consider our
old equipment.

REI also has a sale starting on friday 8th. They have North Face Snowshoe 3D 0o
bags for 149/159 (reg/long) retail (199/209) (synthetic polarguard 3d filling)
In terms of bags, we could probably get some more 0o bags for winter school.

Luke was mentioning getting more bags. I dont know if all tents are out, I dont think
so, but I think the new EMS tents hold up pretty well, and are getting lots of
use. If we can have a large number of them, it seems that maybe more people
would use them on long trips (like kili, and now perhaps australia), so they can
get paid quickly, and people have good quality equipment.

I would suggest getting 4 tents and 6 sleeping bags (the TNF snowshoes, 4 reg, 2 long)
680+920=1600+tax. Maybe people can suggest a differnt mixture.
although we should move fast, I think the fall circus will bring a lot
of money (I counted $980 in checks today, and that's not even everybody),
and we have an opportunity like Kilimanjaro with the solar car
team to get some tents paid quickly, so we should move fast. The EMS sale starts
on thrusday, and we can probably check their availability now. I would volunteer
to make it happen if approved.

while we are at it, I would also suggest getting one large or extra large (33 or 41)
for carrying gear that we put on and off cars and trailers. For carrying climbing
gear on circus they would be very nice. We can even rent them out on the condition that
if they rip they would keep them, and we would keep their deposit, telling them
it would be very unlikely to rip. I think that for trips like Kili or any big
trips they could certainltly use big duffle bags (also for trips like the
joshua tree trip last march).

also this year, we'll probably make a little bit more money, since we had two fall
circi instead of one. We could even have another one later on depending on the
outcome of this one.

This trip report reflects
some of my impressions from the trip

Some were forgotten,
some were censurable,
some were not gotten,
but most were unmeasurable

I encourage other people to write a little about what they did also.
All the names of the trip members were changed to hide their
identities, any resemblance or equality with their real names is pure
coincidence :-)

It takes only three words to describe it: "it was awesome" (pronounced
oh(deep)some).

So it all started for me at 2pm, helping Scott to put together MITOC's
new super canoe rack with dual supporting bars.
