Ben Slivka's Bio:

Ben joined the Amazon.com team in September as Director of Information
Technology. Prior to that, Ben worked at Microsoft for 14 years on a
variety of products and technologies, including OS/2, MS-DOS 6,
Windows 95, the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, an advanced user
interface prototype, and MSN. Ben's most public effort was starting
the Internet Explorer effort and leading the IE team through the
release of Internet Explorer version 3.0. He also started and led a
two-person project to improve Microsoft's lossless data compression
technology, resulting in bottom-line savings of +$60 million/year in
1994 and 1995. Ben has drafted and negotiated several contracts,
including the acquisition of a small company, the purchase of data
compression technology, and the licensing of Internet content and
software. He worked extensively with key Microsoft partners,
including AOL, Compuserve, HP, IBM, and Intel. Ben performed
technical due diligence evaluations for two successful Microsoft
acquisitions (eShop and Hotmail), organized a third technical due
diligence that did not proceed, and has performed technical personnel
audits on behalf of senior management. He has managed software
development teams of as many as 140 people, and has been very active
in campus recruiting and employee retention, including work on
improving the management skills of middle managers. Ben received
B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science and a B.S. degree in Applied
Mathematics from Northwestern University, where he joined the board of
trustees in 1998.
